If you are planning to deploy a UC platform, keep the following pitfalls in mind to keep your implementation process as smooth as possible.

1. Shiny Object Syndrome
Don’t put the cart before the horse. Rather than choosing from all of the fancy features available or just going with what your IT department decides, take a close look at how your business really operates and how the users will be interfacing with the system. If you choose a UC system that is too complicated or cumbersome to use because it is the “newest shiny object” available on the market, your users will most likely avoid the system. Once you figure out what your users’ needs are, it will be much easier to select a UC platform that will work seamlessly with your existing methods of doing business.

2. Biting Off More Than You Can Chew
It is important to only buy as much system as you need. Unified Communications are designed to help your business operate more efficiently by allowing people to communicate and/or exchange information across various devices. You can always implement a UC system in phases or add on more components as they are needed in the future. It usually takes 1 – 2 years to roll out a successful implementation. Be patient and give your users time to adapt to the system as well as giving yourself time to start seeing the return on your initial investment.

3. Determining Cost of Ownership
Although it may be difficult to determine the total costs associated with buying, owning and operating a unified communications platform until it goes live, be sure to factor in time that the IT department may need to spend answering questions and teaching people how to use the system. Another consideration is long-term costs. For example, a UC platform designed for a midsize enterprise with 1,000 users will require 10 servers in a Microsoft environment, five servers with Cisco and two with Avaya—an 80 percent cost difference in hardware alone. That doesn’t include the cost of hardware maintenance and system administrators.

Beware of paying licensing costs for features that you don’t use because of the way the software licensing is sometimes bundled as an “all or none” deal, which may not end up being such a good deal in the long run. Knowing the front-end costs (hardware, software, licensing) as well as the back-end costs (administration, maintenance, service delivery) upfront can go a long way toward understanding the bottom-line costs of a UC implementation.

Here are some ways to measure your return on investment:
- Internet Protocol transport savings
- Reduced mobile phone costs
- Increased employee efficiency
- Savings in upgrading to a more modern communications platform

4. Communication
It is important for the management and IT department to provide clear direction, guidance and expectations for the implementation of a new system. An effective change management program begins with a clear plan for when each stage of the deployment will take place and setting expectations about what types of changes users should make and see as a result. Providing ample training opportunities is also key to a successful implementation.

5. Vendor and Partner Selection
Luckily, there are a few unified communications vendors that offer complete enterprise-wide solutions as well as expert help in assessing your company’s needs and customizing a solution for you. You need to consider your partner choice carefully and should plan to evaluate at least four vendors before making your final selection.

According to the Info-Tech Research Group, “The fact is that for most enterprises, the selection of the product itself should be secondary to the strength and vision of the vendor, and the knowledge and expertise of the integrator.” Because a unified communications implementation is one of the most important decisions your company will make, be sure to shop around for the best solution for your specific needs, your budget, and the most supportive partner to help you create a solid strategy and plan for success. Change happens slowly at times but it often turns out to be exactly the kind of change an organization needs to improve operations, reduce costs and remain competitive.

Windows Phone wins ‘Smoked by Windows Phone’ challenge “just because”

You may have heard about the Smoked by Windows Phone competition by now. In these events, a Windows Phone device is pitted against any other smartphone and both are made to do a simple task, with the winner being the one who completes it first. The task is usually something as simple as taking a picture and uploading it to Facebook or finding directions to a place. But as it turns out, this challenge is not as fair as Microsoft makes it out to be, as Sahas Katta of Skatter Tech found out the hard way.

Katta was in a Microsoft store where he wanted to take part in the competition. He was armed with his new Galaxy Nexus. The challenge given to him was to bring up the weather of two different cities as quickly as possible.

Luckily for Katta, he had set up the weather for two cities on his homescreens using widgets and he had also disabled the lockscreen on his phone, a feature found on Android 4.0. Because of this, he could get to his homescreen from sleep mode with just one click of the power button. As you can tell, he was going to win even before the competition started, because no matter how quick Windows Phone is, you’d require at least two interactions (press power button, slide lock screen) to get to the homescreen.

That’s basically what happened when the competition started, with Katta managing to finish before his opponent, who also happened to have the weather for two cities on the homescreen (more on this later). But as it turns out, the winner was actually declared to be the Windows Phone? Why? “Just because”.

That’s just one of the vague replies that Katta got when he asked the people in the Microsoft store for answers. Eventually he had to leave because clearly no one there was in a mood to declare him the winner and give him the prize, a $1,000 special edition laptop.

As you can see, these competitions may not be as clean as the Microsoft’s official videos make them out to be. Other than the fact that the people in the store refused to acknowledge Katta as the winner, they also played dirty by having the weather widgets of the two cities right on the homescreen even before the competition started. That’s not how Windows Phone comes out of the box. Microsoft had set up their phone to a favorable state before the competition, which is basically cheating. Had Katta not had the weather widgets on his phone (which is fine because he actually uses that phone and wasn’t aware of the challenge until he was told about it), he would have taken much longer to bring the weather up. Not that it matters because they declared him the loser anyway.

Of course, this is not to say that all the Smoked by Windows Phone competitions are bogus or that Windows Phone isn’t good at doing some tasks faster than its rivals (it is). But this example here proves that we need to take these things with a heavy dose of Sodium Chloride.

Tizen and BlackBerry 10 browser top the HTML5 test benchmark

The Linux-based Tizen platform is yet to see the light of day on a retail handset but it goes without saying that the OS is being tested internally by Samsung. As such, we are not completely surprised to see the name pop-up in benchmark results, which in this case happens to be the browser based HTML5 test.

What’s interesting, however, is that the Tizen browser not only showed up in the benchmark, it also managed to top it within its category (Mobile Phones) while running on an unknown device. But it wasn’t alone; snapping at its heels was a browser from another, yet to be launched OS, the BlackBerry 10.

As you can see from the scores above, the Tizen browser took the No.1 spot with a score of 363 with 15 bonus points whereas the BlackBerry 10 browser got a score of 361 with 10 additional points. Although it’s not confirmed yet, both browsers are likely to be based on the WebKit rendering engine, same as Mobile Safari and the Android browser. The third spot goes to the stable version of the recently launched Opera 12, with a score of 354 and 10 extra points. In comparison, both the iOS 5 and Android 4.0 browsers are behind, the latter more so than the former, and the Internet Explorer Mobile in Windows Phone 7.5 scored even less than the browser in Nokia Belle.

Of course, in real world, the HTML5 score does not affect the browser performance by a lot, especially today, but it’s one of those things that’s good to have, particularly in terms of future-proofing.

Update: As noted in the comments below, the score for the Tizen browser has been updated and it now stands at an astonishing 387 points with 15 bonus points. That’s even more than Chrome 17, which currently has the highest score of all the desktop browsers out there!

 

 

HTC One series Menu button mystery solved

Ever since HTC announced the One series at MWC last month, the one thing that has been bugging me was the layout of the keys at the bottom of the display. You see, unlike the Galaxy Nexus, HTC went for hard keys that are permanently placed at the bottom of the display, instead of soft keys on the display.

As you can see, there is no dedicated Menu button, because Android 4.0 does not require a dedicated Menu button. Google has advised developers to get rid of the Menu buttons completely and place all the important functions on the screen itself, with the other, less important functions inside a drop down menu placed on the top right of the screen in ICS-optimized apps. But what about the older apps that are not ICS-optimized and rely on the Menu button to display all the additional functions?

On the Galaxy Nexus, this problem was solved by displaying a temporary Menu button on the screen, as seen above. The button would appear on the right of the three keys already present on the screen and did not take any extra space. But the HTC One series phones have the keys placed on the outside, so what you see below is the solution HTC had to come up with.

These are the benchmark scores for the AT&T version of the HTC One X. As you can see, non-ICS-optimized app (such as Vellamo and Quadrant seen in the screenshot above) will force the OS to display a separate Menu button, found all alone in a separate bar at the bottom, which, quite frankly, looks silly.

Now I understand why HTC may not have chosen to place the keys on the display itself because then they always end up using a portion of the display, whether the app needs to display a Menu button or not, thus reducing the accessible screen real estate to the app and the user. By placing the keys separately below the display, all the pixels on the screen are available to the app. But the problem is, this would have worked marvelously had all the apps been optimized for ICS, which is not the case. So for a long time, users of the One series handsets will have to deal with this extra button at the bottom of their screens. Hopefully, this will make the developers optimize their apps for ICS even quicker, so they don’t stick out like this on newer devices.

 

 

HTC One X for AT&T gets benchmarked, looks impressive

When the AT&T flavored HTC One X flagship got announced during MWC, quite a few people were left wondering whether its Snapdragon S4 chipset with two CPU cores will match the performance of the quad-core Tegra 3 of the international version.

Well, it looks like there is no need to worry over the performance of the U.S. bound handset. A couple of leaked benchmarks from the device, leaked by an alleged AT&T device tester, point at a seriously capable piece of hardware coming our way.

As you can see above, the two Krait cores, featured in the chipset have a serious knack for benchmarks. The tester has also mentioned that the battery life of the device is rather impressive as well.

The rumored time frame for the launch of the AT&T branded HTC One X is mid-May. Naturally, we will keep you posted as soon as we find out more. In the meantime, check out our hands-on of the LTE sporting HTC One X here.

RIM to give out BlackBerry OS 10 dev prototypes in early May

RIM is preparing a new OS - called BlackBerry 10 - to replace the two current OSes that it uses (BB OS 7 on phones and Tablet OS on the PlayBook). The BB OS 10 will launch late this year, but app developers can look forward to playing with it sooner - 2000 developer prototypes running a version of the OS will be given to the attendees of the BlackBerry Jam conference taking place in early May.

RIMs VP of developer relations, Alec Saunders, says that the prototypes will have a very different user experience compared to the finalized BlackBerry 10 OS as they are intended to be just tools to help developers port their apps to the new platform.

The BlackBerry PlayBooks OS is reportedly similar to what BB 10 will be and that will make porting PlayBook apps to the new OS easy. Saunders says his goal is that every single PlayBook app works on BB10.

Thats good, but whats with RIMs reluctance to show what the finalized OS will look like? Saunders says this is intentional as they want to take time and build up interest before launching the OS.

We have seen some alleged screenshots of the upcoming OS, but who knows how much will change until the time comes for RIM to unleash the first BlackBerry 10-powered devices.

New phones that run on BlackBerry OS 10 wont be here for a while (at least until Q3 according to leaked roadmap), the oft leaked BlackBerry London might be the first. The PlayBook will see an update to BB OS 10 too, but its not clear if that will happen before or after the BB 10 phones launch.

Developer stats show quick adoption of iOS 5.1 by users

iOS users have historically been shown to quickly upgrade to the latest update compared to other platforms and with the latest release of iOS 5.1 this seems truer than ever.

Developer David Smith who created the app Audiobooks, a universal app available on both the iPhone and the iPad in free and paid variants and with around 100,000 weekly downloads, has some statistics that he collected from the users downloading his app every since Apple released iOS 5.1 on March 7.

As you can see from the graph above, fourteen days after iOS 5.1 was released, 61 percent of the total users downloading his app were using it, with only 18 percent on the older iOS 5.0.0. The 19 percent of the users on iOS 4.x are likely those using older versions of the iPhone or iPod touch, who are not eligible for iOS 5.

If we look at only iOS 5.x users, the number is even more impressive, with 77 percent of the users on the latest update.

One of the suspected reasons for the quicker adoption of the latest iOS updates is the addition of over-the-air (OTA) updates that was introduced with iOS 5. Now since the update is available directly on their devices, users are more likely to instantly update their phones as soon as it is made available, instead of doing it some time later by connecting it to their computers.

Of course, this is good news for the developers, because if the users update to the newer OS versions quickly, they can also implement new OS related features in their apps faster and drop support for older OS versions that don't support these features.

This data is just for one app, however. We will have to wait for someone to take into account all iOS users so we can have a better idea of the adoption rate.

Samsung Galaxy Note ICS update pushed back to Q2

We are afraid we have some bad news for the Galaxy Note users out there. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the phoneblet has been pushed back from its initially announced Q1 launch to Q2.

It's only been confirmed by Samsung Norway through its Facebook account, so it's not certain if the delay will be a global thing, but that seems likely. The global rollout of the Ice Cream Sandwich update only took a few days, so we assume the Galaxy Note units, which are much fewer in number will be updated in a very short interval.

The reason for the delay is unknown just yet and so is the exact launch date. With Q2 starting in a couple of weeks and ending in June the delay might be a pretty minor thing or it could mean another three months without the latest and greatest from the Google OS for the Note users. Here's hoping it will be a case of the former rather than the latter!
