AT&T HTC One X gets update to fix Wi-Fi connectivity bug

The AT&T version of the HTC One X is now receiving a firmware update that brings the phone to version 1.85.502.3. The update weighs in at 64.55MB and is now rolling out over the air.

The main change here is fix to the Wi-Fi connectivity issue that some users were complaining about. Other changes include increase in Wi-Fi throughput, which means you will get improved speeds over Wi-Fi and AT&T address book fixes, where the contacts no longer get formatted when synced to AAB.

If you have a rooted device, this update will unroot your phone, so might have to wait a bit longer until a fix comes out for this.

AT&T HTC One X not part of HTC's bootloader unlocking program

The AT&T version of the very impressive HTC One X will be landing in US tomorrow on May 6. Unfortunately, even before customers can get their hands on the phone, there is a disappointing bit of news waiting for them.

When The Verge reached out to HTC regarding the bootloader on the One X, which, as noticed by MoDaCo, is locked, the company responded by saying that due to some restrictions, the bootloader on the One X will not be unlockable.

As you may know, an unlocked bootloader is necessary for anyone wishing to experiment with custom ROMs on their Android devices. HTC, by default, sells their phones with locked bootloader, however, they they do offer the option for users to unlock the bootloader if they wish to. It is believed that the reason for the locked bootloader on the US version of One X is AT&T, who would understandably not want people to replace their version of the One X ROM with custom ROMs. This, however, goes against the open spirit of Android and is likely to be frowned upon by the developer community.

So are you still looking forward to getting your hands on the AT&T One X? Does an unlocked bootloader matter a lot to you? Let us know in the comments below.

HTC talks the One X bootloader, blames AT&T

Today AT&T is launching its version of One X (internationally known as One XL). But those users hoping to unlock the bootloader will be disappointed the smartphone isn't supported by the HTC bootloader unlocking program.

HTC quickly released a statement shedding more light on the matter:

"HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future."

HTC is clearly saying that it's not the problem here, unambiguously pointing the finger at AT&T. The carrier is famous for its often ridiculously restrictions (or worse) on popular smartphones. And since AT&T is involved here you should probably forget about official unlock of the One X bootloader ever.

Yes, it sucks.

HTC One X for AT&T gets benchmarked, looks impressive

When the AT&T flavored HTC One X flagship got announced during MWC, quite a few people were left wondering whether its Snapdragon S4 chipset with two CPU cores will match the performance of the quad-core Tegra 3 of the international version.

Well, it looks like there is no need to worry over the performance of the U.S. bound handset. A couple of leaked benchmarks from the device, leaked by an alleged AT&T device tester, point at a seriously capable piece of hardware coming our way.

As you can see above, the two Krait cores, featured in the chipset have a serious knack for benchmarks. The tester has also mentioned that the battery life of the device is rather impressive as well.

The rumored time frame for the launch of the AT&T branded HTC One X is mid-May. Naturally, we will keep you posted as soon as we find out more. In the meantime, check out our hands-on of the LTE sporting HTC One X here.
