Sony to outsource up to 40% of phone manufacturing?

Sony is looking to ship more phones in 2013, according to DigiTimes, going from a projected 35 million to 50 million. To get the job done, the company plans to outsource some of the manufacturing to big ODMs.

Foxconn has been manufacturing low-end Sony phones since Q3 of this year. According to sources, Sony will add Arima and Compal to the list of makers early next year. Together, the three companies are expected to get orders for around 30-40% of the Xperia phones to be made in 2013.

As for what those ODMs might be making next year - the low-end Sony Xperia E and E Duos leaked recently. There's also the Xperia Odin and Xperia Yuga to look forward to, but it's unclear if Sony will outsource the manufacturing of its high-end models as well.

It will be a while before Windows Phone 7.8 update is released

Windows Phone 8 might be officially out, but the Windows Phone 7.8 update is nowhere to be found. Microsoft even ignored the matter during the press conference yesterday.

Latest online rumor has it, the Windows Phone 7.8 will be released a few weeks after the first WP8 devices hit the shelves. Then we would have to wait for the first wave of cheap WP7.8 devices that will run the release out of the box and later all old-gen Windows Phone handsets will get the update as an OTA or via Zune.

We guess all of the previous Windows Phone owners would have to wait at least a month to get the goodies brought by the 7.8 update. Let's hope the update will be worth the wait.

HTC Windows Phone 8X photo and video samples surface

The HTC Windows Phone 8X is still hot off the announcement stage and we weren't hoping for camera samples to appear so early.

The new smartphone is touted for its 8 megapixel camera with a backside illuminated sensor, wide f/2.0 aperture and 28mm wide viewing angle, so we were quite excited to see some real-life shots.

From the looks of it, the HTC Windows Phone 8X delivers some sharp photos, though the noise suppression clearly leaves its marks on the really fine detail. The macro shot reveals some really close focusing and a nicely shallow depth of field.

As you'll notice, the shots are not full 8MP because they've been shot in 16:9 mode but nevertheless, they most certainly convey the full capabilities of the camera.

HTC Windows Phone 8X camera samples

And here's a 1080p video sample shot by the HTC Windows Phone 8X. When watching the video, make sure you select the 1080p option and open it fullscreen to appreciate the quality as much as the YouTube conversion has preserved it. The video footage is impressively sharp, though it looks as if it could have used some extra color saturation.

If you are curious in more HTC Windows Phone 8X coverage, don't miss our hands-on report from the unveiling event.

Windows Phone Store is the new name of the Marketplace

Microsoft has officially scrapped the Windows Phone Marketplace, folks. The new go-to place for the software giant’s mobile OS applications will be called Windows Phone Store from now on.

Along with the new name, Microsoft has introduced several improvements to the Windows Phone Store. They include better search functionality powered by Bing, as well as overhauled app lists. The latter include Top Free, Top Paid, as well as New + Rising categories. The new application lists will only be available at the Web Store for now. They are however, expected to hit upcoming Windows Phone devices.

The changes have already landed in Australia and New Zealand. The rest of the world is bound to follow in the coming weeks.

Google Play Store can now charge your movie, music and book downloads to your phone bill

The Play Store has had the ability to charge your app downloads to your phone bill in certain markets and on certain carriers.

Now Google has expanded that to include movies, music and ebooks, basically everything that can be bought off the Play Store, as well.

In the US, this feature is only available to users on AT&T and T-Mobile’s network but it will be coming soon to Sprint customers as well. In Japan, it is available for DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank customers. Other countries include Germany (T-Mobile International, Vodafone), Italy (Vodafone), Korea (KT, SKT, LGU+), Spain (Vodafone) and UK (T-Mobile International, Vodafone).

Hopefully, Google will add other regions soon. It will also be nice if they could add the option to gift content to others.

LG has no future plans for Windows Phone devices

LG is dropping from the Windows Phone race and has no plans to release any gadgets of that kind. The decision is not final, of course, and LG will continue its partnership with Microsoft.

As you can imagine, LGs U-turn is based on the really weak sales and most probably the threat from the Microsoft/Nokia team.

Microsofts CEO Steve Ballmer has a scheduled visit in Korea in May to explore partnership opportunities. LG is most probably on the list too, so well have to see what happens then. Keep in mind though, that Samsung will surely be pushing WP8 running devices later this year, which will be an additional threat for everyone else.

Anyway we look at this, it seems a wise decision on LG's behalf - at least for the time being. The Lumia lineup is the most popular WP brand and, combined with the low user demand, it is quite natural for LG to focus completely on Google's Android OS.

Steve Wozniak finds Windows Phone more beautiful than Android

Despite being the co-founder of Apple, Steve Wozniak is known to use products from competing brands and publicly speak and praise them as he sees fit. So when he was asked about Windows Phone 7 by A New Domain, he did not hesitate to speak his mind.

As anyone would guess, Woz finds Windows Phone to be visually a lot superior to Android, going as far as saying that there is no contest between the two. He seemed to be especially in love with the transition animations and the simplicity of the UI, which makes it immediately apparent to the user what they have to do next. In comparison, he thinks that the Android UI is a lot more complex and requires prior knowledge on part of the user.

Woz went as far as saying that he thinks Microsoft hired someone from Apple to design certain apps and that Steve Jobs may have been reincarnated at Microsoft as some things Microsoft is doing with Windows Phone reminds him of great Apple products.

It’s not all rosy, though. Woz said that the lack of quality apps is a drawback for Microsoft’s OS. He also wishes that Windows Phone had better voice integration like Android or iOS for searching or typing. But that does not seem to bother him much as he did mention that he carries his Windows Phone everywhere these days.

As for which Windows Phone he uses, Woz was not clear on that but he talked about using a Nokia Lumia phone, which means it’s probably the Lumia 900. He was also using a Motorola DROID RAZR at the time of the interview (and we already know he has a Galaxy Nexus) along with his two iPhones, one on Verizon and the other on AT&T, which he says are his main phones.

You can listen to the full audio interview in the source link below. Don’t forget to catch one of his comments below the article.

5 IPad Apps For Making Free Phone Calls

The iPad’s portability makes it possible to be updated with the latest happenings even when travelling. It is indeed a great communication device since it allows you to chat, send an email, or keep in touch with friends through social networking. The iPad can also be your telephone. Yes! You heard it right. All thanks to certain applications that allow you to make free phone calls. Here are some of them.

1. Whistle Phone

Although your iPad can never replace your mobile phone, it still functions like one with Whistle Phone.
For people who live outside the US, Whistle Phone provides one a free and easy way to get your own US number. This allows you to both make and receive calls as well. iPhone users and desktop users (Mac OS X and Windows) can also download the respective versions of this software.

2. Truphone

Truphone is the first VoIP application to be specifically produced for use on the iPad which we think is pretty darn cool. As you’d expect from the Truphone iPad application, it lets you make free Wi-Fi calls to other Truphone and Google Talk users and low-cost calls over Wi-Fi to landlines and mobile phones across the world.

Another cool feature of Truphone on the iPad is that it lets you chat via instant messenger (IM) to Google Talk, MSN and AIM users making it easier than ever to stay in touch with friends on the go.

3. Skype
Skype VOIP still is working on a VOIP calling app over Apple's iPad. Currently, it is still under experimentation from the big guys from Skype. Right after the grand gala launch of the Apple iPad, hundreds of apps developers are blossoming day by day, selling their creations to the virtual market.

4. Vopium

Vopium also overseas texting, as well as free unlimited international calls in Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi & Vopium to Vopium modes, much like the features of Truphone. You can also call directly to landlines and mobile phones over 2G / 3G cellular networks.

Above all, the Vopium VOIP app for iPad and iPhone permits free calling to your friends via Skype and GTalk.

5. Fring

What makes Fring great is its Facebook and Twitter integration. It is also compatible with many IM clients. However, the call quality s rather muffled when using this application. Also, you cannot send direct messages to Facebook and Twitter friends. Still, the quality of voice calls is just acceptable. With its rich social networking and IM compatibility, Fring is still worth downloading for your device.

You can simply download Fring from the App store and enjoy easy chatting and calling from your iPad. And, of course, this is all free.

The choice of your applications ultimately depends on you, but you might give these 5 applications a try. Utilizing free applications are cost-effective, because you can easily download them and make use of them right after. After all, there are hundreds of applications out there in the market that are dedicated for communication.

Samsung holding an event for the next Galaxy phone on May 3

Samsung has finally started sending out the official invites for the event in London on Mar 3 for the next Galaxy handset.

The invite doesn't say much but it's highly likely that it will be about the Galaxy S III (or whatever Samsung decides to call it). It's clear from the invite that Samsung is talking about only one device here, which makes us all the more certain that it is just the Galaxy S III that Samsung will announce. As far as the puddles of liquid seen in the invite, it could be nothing more than something used to fill up the invite image or something as exciting as an indicator for the device having a Liquidmetal body.

Samsung has taken its own sweet time with this device, even choosing to play it low at the popular Mobile World Congress this year, which is when companies make major announcements. Hopefully, this phone will live up to everyone's expectations.

Nokia builds a phone for the Ice Age, check it out

Northern-based and ice-clad Nokia has prepared an interesting new phone for the world – the cold, awaiting an eventual next Ice Age world.

The phone’s exterior is made from, wait for it, ice, while the innards are superhydrophobic or otherwise water-proof. It also seems to run Windows Phone, judging by the provided picture.

The phone can be charged by putting it in the freezer, neat huh. The technology behind it is called endothermic reaction only instead of heat it captures cold.

By now you’re probably thinking – April Fools’, right – well that’s right. Nice try from Nokia PR!

An Introduction to Asterisk Phone Systems

Asterisk phone systems is a software that uses a computer and turns it into a server for communications. A lot of multinational companies as well as small business utilize Asterisk such as call centers, government agencies, telecommunications carriers and even small businesses.

The program is for free and open-sourced, which is capable for lots of uses and makes older telephone systems obsolete. Since it is in fact a type of software, it can be manipulated and customized, thus adding to its versatility and function.

This telephony system is used for a lot of functions such as conference calls, voice mails, phone menus and call distributions that are done automatically. The old way was to use a PBX or Private Branch Exchange, which most companies and large businesses have as a medium for their telephone system. However, using a PBX system can be quite expensive and can sum up to millions to support a large company's needs. Most of the time, add-ons such as queuing and voice mails add up to costs and provide problems when they need to be integrated to the current system.

This telecommunications software routes calls through VoIP (Voice-Over Internet Protocol) and relies on the Ethernet. In that manner, all telephone lines are connected to the Ethernet which becomes the spine of the network.

The difference with using this software as opposed to a standard PBX is that you are able to do the same things with the former without the monumental costs of the latter. It also has other features in the system which provides detailed call logs, SQL database configuration and online administration.

Other features of using this telephony program are also quite effective and efficient, such as being able to provide teleconferencing options and calling other kinds of telecommunications system using other programs. This software also provides queuing services for call center companies, which then interprets the expected waiting time for the caller.

It is important to note that by just utilizing only a Linux personal computer, one can have a complete Asterisk system without having to spend any amount of money for it. The PC becomes the server, where all calls pass through it and the system creates a way to route the calls.

Most of the companies that utilize phone systems for their services mostly use this new technology. For example, if you have called to order an item from one company, you might hear some music in the background while your call is being transferred. This feature is powered by the Asterisk system as well as your queue when waiting to be attended with during a phone conversation.

There are basically two types of telephones used for the Asterisk system: the hard telephone and soft phone. Hard phones look like classic office phones, using an Ethernet cable instead of a standard phone jack. Soft phones, on the other hand, are entirely used by software. You will need a microphone and an earpiece connected to a computer. Many have switched to using soft phones as it minimizes the cost and has more features over hard phones.

Windows Phone wins ‘Smoked by Windows Phone’ challenge “just because”

You may have heard about the Smoked by Windows Phone competition by now. In these events, a Windows Phone device is pitted against any other smartphone and both are made to do a simple task, with the winner being the one who completes it first. The task is usually something as simple as taking a picture and uploading it to Facebook or finding directions to a place. But as it turns out, this challenge is not as fair as Microsoft makes it out to be, as Sahas Katta of Skatter Tech found out the hard way.

Katta was in a Microsoft store where he wanted to take part in the competition. He was armed with his new Galaxy Nexus. The challenge given to him was to bring up the weather of two different cities as quickly as possible.

Luckily for Katta, he had set up the weather for two cities on his homescreens using widgets and he had also disabled the lockscreen on his phone, a feature found on Android 4.0. Because of this, he could get to his homescreen from sleep mode with just one click of the power button. As you can tell, he was going to win even before the competition started, because no matter how quick Windows Phone is, you’d require at least two interactions (press power button, slide lock screen) to get to the homescreen.

That’s basically what happened when the competition started, with Katta managing to finish before his opponent, who also happened to have the weather for two cities on the homescreen (more on this later). But as it turns out, the winner was actually declared to be the Windows Phone? Why? “Just because”.

That’s just one of the vague replies that Katta got when he asked the people in the Microsoft store for answers. Eventually he had to leave because clearly no one there was in a mood to declare him the winner and give him the prize, a $1,000 special edition laptop.

As you can see, these competitions may not be as clean as the Microsoft’s official videos make them out to be. Other than the fact that the people in the store refused to acknowledge Katta as the winner, they also played dirty by having the weather widgets of the two cities right on the homescreen even before the competition started. That’s not how Windows Phone comes out of the box. Microsoft had set up their phone to a favorable state before the competition, which is basically cheating. Had Katta not had the weather widgets on his phone (which is fine because he actually uses that phone and wasn’t aware of the challenge until he was told about it), he would have taken much longer to bring the weather up. Not that it matters because they declared him the loser anyway.

Of course, this is not to say that all the Smoked by Windows Phone competitions are bogus or that Windows Phone isn’t good at doing some tasks faster than its rivals (it is). But this example here proves that we need to take these things with a heavy dose of Sodium Chloride.
