Sony Xperia miro review: You too

Introduction

In a world full of phones you wish you could afford, the Sony Xperia miro is one you don't have to wish too hard for. In honesty, Sony didn't work themselves too hard, but when you're putting together a portfolio from scratch, you want it built on solid foundations.

The Xperia miro is another simple package joining the ranks, filling in the blank space between the Xperia tipo and the Xperia go. The miro is a notch above the tipo, and costs an extra few bucks - Sony went about it strictly by the book without taking unnecessary risks.

The looks of the Xperia go - minus the rugged treatment - with the Xperia tipo's internals. It's a fairly straightforward mixture that will also fill the price gap between the starter package and the rugged smartphone. Lots of choice for different budgets is the secret to a large and loyal user base.

Let's have a look now at all the features and the possible deal-breakers.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual-band UMTS support

  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA

  • 3.5" 16M-color LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen of HVGA resolution (320 x 480 pixels) at around 165 ppi

  • Android OS v4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

  • 800 MHz Cortex-A5 CPU, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm MSM7225A chipset

  • 512 MB of RAM

  • 4GB of inbuilt storage (2.2GB user available)

  • microSD slot (32GB supported)

  • 5 MP autofocus camera, single LED flashlight, geotagging, smile detection, touch focus

  • VGA video @ 30fps

  • Secondary VGA front camera

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot

  • GPS with A-GPS

  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • Stereo FM radio with RDS

  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1

  • 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery

Main disadvantages

  • Middling screen quality

  • Non-hot-swappable microSD slot

  • No hardware shutter key

  • No DivX/XviD support

  • Occasional lags in the user interface

  • Mediocre audio output

The major improvements over the Xperia tipo are the bigger LED-backlit screen, the higher-res camera and the secondary cam for video calls. The screen is the same size and resolution as the Xperia go's but isn't the Bravia-backed Reality display we've seen on a number of Sony and Sony Ericsson handsets.

That and the single-core CPU, as well as the non-rugged build, has helped the Xperia miro lower the price considerably. Overall though, it's clearly a bet on the safe side - the Xperia miro is perfectly on par with its main competitors. So let's give this fella a chance and see what it's really made of.

ICS updates for several Sony Xperia devices are now live

After a spring filled with anticipation, the Xperia U, go and sola were among the last remaining devices among the new Xperia line to not be running Android 4.0.

It's unsure whether the update brings with it some of the nifty ICS features we saw on the Xperia T flagship, such as the redone Album and Movies apps, but at the very least these devices will be getting the usual bug fixes, optimizations and peace of mind that come with a higher OS version.

One thing worth mentioning is that the Xperia sola is set to receive a special "glove mode" feature that allows it to utilize the devices floating touch display technology to use the device even with gloves on.

The availability of the update will depend upon market and carrier requirements, so it make take a while for it to come to your particular neck of the woods.

Sony Xperia Tablet S visits our office, shows its fold-over design and customized Android to our camera

The Sony Xperia Tablet S left its Sony HQ home to spend some time with us. It carries over some design elements from its predecessor, like the 9.4? WXGA screen and fold-over design, but it adds goodies like a quad-core processor (moving from Tegra 2 to 3), thinner aluminum frame and IPX-4 certification (splash proof).

The Xperia Tablet S is 8.8mm thick along its back, with a thicker “fold” on top. This makes the tablet easier to hold in the hand and is used to attach the tablet to various accessories.

Sony gave us a suede cover to test, which also serves as a stand (it can hold the tablet tilted at two different angles). It snaps into place and will hold the tablet upside down, but we wouldn’t shake it too hard. When you close it, you can use the elastic band to keep it shut.

The tablet is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, but the 16GB one will probably be the most popular as there is an SD card slot. That’s right, not microSD, but a regular-sized SD card slot, meaning you can expand the storage on the cheap.

Sony Xperia Tablet S in our office

The top of the tablet houses an IR port, so you can use the tablet as a remote control. The included app is quite powerful and can even learn new commands directly from a remote control, if your appliance isn’t on the (quite extensive) list of presets.

The Sony Xperia Tablet S really feels like something intended for home use with the Remote control app. It even comes with a Small app version, so you can always switch the channel.

Speaking of Small apps, they are floating apps that take up only a part of the screen and can be used along side regular apps. You can see them in action in the video below.

We’re doing our complete review thing on the Sony Xperia Tablet S, so stick around if you want to learn more on the slate.

Sony Xperia tipo review: Mini just got bigger

Introduction

The NXT line gave Sony the strong start they needed after returning to the smartphone game on their own. The Japanese then focused on filling the lower ranks and, yet again, we see them look for inspiration in the old Sony Ericsson scrapbook.

Sony Ericsson Xperia miroSony Ericsson Xperia miro
Sony Ericsson Xperia miro

Sony Xperia tipo official pictures

The Sony Xperia tipo is right on time for the anniversary of the Xperia mini's launch. The little droid by Sony Ericsson is still a reasonably popular choice for bargain-hunters. But it's time it stepped down and made room for the new generation.

The Xperia tipo is also doing fairly well in terms of software. While some of the first Sony smartphones had to wait a fair while to upgrade from Gingerbread, the tipo launches on ICS. Attractive design and a modern OS are the key features of this entry-level Android smartphone with modest specs and an affordable price tag.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and dual-band UMTS support

  • 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA

  • 3.2" 256K-color capacitive TFT touchscreen of HVGA resolution (320 x 480)

  • Android OS v4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

  • 800 MHz Cortex-A5 CPU, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm MSM7225AA chipset

  • 512 MB of RAM

  • 2.5GB of inbuilt storage

  • microSD slot (32GB supported)

  • 3.15 MP fixed-focus camera, geotagging

  • VGA video @ 25fps

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot

  • GPS with A-GPS

  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • Stereo FM radio with RDS

  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1

  • User-accessible battery, Li-Ion 1500 mAh

Main disadvantages

  • Fixed-focus camera, No LED flash

  • Mediocre screen quality

  • No front camera

  • Non-hot-swappable microSD slot

  • Loudspeaker performance is so-so

  • No DivX/XviD support

The Sony Xperia tipo is a bit underpowered compared to its Sony Ericsson predecessor - the CPU and the graphics chip are expected to be slightly less capable than the Scorpion/Adreno 205 combo inside the Xperia mini. As a result, the 720p video playback and recording are out of the equation.

Sony Xperia tipo

Sony Xperia tipo

Sony Xperia tipo live pictures

But hey, the tipo is not in the HD race, as its price tag will quickly testify. The handset targets the entry-level market and Android ICS is its key value-adding feature. But is there more to it? Stay with us for the whole story.

Sony Xperia V to feature sensor-on-lens display technology

Sony has confirmed that the upcoming Xperia V will feature a special sensor-on-lens technology.

This will allow for a decrease in display thickness, as well as for a more direct touch experience with whatever is being displayed.

The new technology will allow Sony to remove the extra sensor layer located between the display and the lens, and create a type of hybrid layer that combines lens and sensor. This brings a 5% improvement in display luminance, as well less haze.

The removal of the extra layer also helps decrease overall weight and thickness, although Sony has not stated by how much the Xperia V has slimmed down thanks to the innovative feature.

The Xperia V was introduced at this years IFA as part of Sony’s new lineup. No word from Sony on whether any of the other Xperias introduced there will feature sensor-on-lens layers as well.

You can check out our hands on with the Xperia V here.

Sony Xperia acro S review: Daring droid

Introduction

After the touchscreen revolution swept the mobile world, rugged smartphones became much harder to come by. They are making a slow return now though, with Sony Mobile being one of the key players in that market.

The tradition of producing attractive rugged droids dates back to the the days of Sony Ericsson, and it's great that it continues now, when Sony is in full control of the company. More impressively, the company shows that it's not going to limit element-resistant smartphones to the mid-range anymore, and so we come to the subject of today's review.

Sony Xperia acro S
Sony Xperia acro S

Sony Xperia acro S official photos

The Sony Xperia acro S may not make the Samsung Galaxy S III shake with fear, but its specs sheet seems good enough to provide a high-end smartphone experience and that should be all that matters, really.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM /GPRS/EDGE support

  • Quad-band 3G with 14.4 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA

  • Bright 4.3" 16M-color capacitive LED-backlit LCD touchscreen of HD resolution (720 x 1280 pixels) with Sony Mobile BRAVIA engine;

  • IP57 certification - dust protected and water proof up to 1 meter and 30 minutes; Scratch-resistant shatter proof glass

  • Android 4.0 ICS

  • Dual-core 1.5 GHz Scorpion, 1 GB RAM, Adreno 220 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon S3 chipset

  • 12 MP autofocus camera with LED flash

  • 1080p video recording @ 30fps with continuous autofocus and stereo sound

  • 1.3MP front-facing camera

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n and DLNA

  • Built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS support

  • NFC connectivity

  • 16GB built-in storage (13GB user accessible)

  • microHDMI port, dedicated TV launcher

  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v3.0

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • Stereo FM radio with RDS

  • Voice dialing

  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor

  • Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic

Main disadvantages

  • Chipset is rather modest for the class

  • Thicker than most rivals

  • Display viewing angles are mediocre

  • No preinstalled document editor

  • Non-user-replaceable battery

The difference in length between the two lists above alone points to the fact that the Sony Xperia acro S is worth a second look. Water resistance might be the headline feature, but it's certainly not everything this Sony smartphone has going for it.

It builds on the Xperia P platform, but addresses the issues of limited storage and uninspiring battery backup and employs a far superior 720p screen, which seems like a pretty good recipe for success.

Sony Xperia acro S
Sony Xperia acro S
Sony Xperia acro S

The Sony Xperia acro S studio shots

And yes, the waistline grew, which is hardly a desirable side-effect these days, but if the performance is all there, we doubt many will mind. Also, we are hoping the S3 chipset, which is now looking more like mid-range material, doesn't have too damaging an effect on the great package.

But let's waste no more time guessing and get down to the actual testing - the hardware inspection starts right after the break.

Sony Xperia S gets a coat of silver paint

Sony has announced that their first smartphone (since they split up with Ericsson) will be available in a new shade of silver, which does look a lot more gray than silver to our eyes. Until now the Xperia S was only available in black and white color options.

Sony also made a point to wax about the pixel density of the display, which they have realized is sharpest HD smartphone display on any phone in the market. Having said that, the Xperia S does share this top spot with the HTC Rezound.

Unfortunately, no mention has been made as to when the aforementioned color option will hit the shelves.

Sony Xperia LT25i 'Tsubasa' uncovered in benchmark results

A small Xperia army seems to be assembling in secrecy - clues of yet another droid appeared in NenaMark and AnTuTu benchmark results. It's called the Sony Xperia LT25i 'Tsubasa'.

It's an Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich device, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset with a dual-core Krait processor at 1.5GHz and Adreno 225 GPU. The screen on the 'Tsubasa' has 720p resolution and the phone will use on-screen Android buttons (the reported resolution of 1196 x 720 gives that away).

NenaMark 2 and AnTuTu benchmark results for the Sony Xperia LT25i Tsubasa

The LT25i is the international version of the Sony Xperia Tsubasa and will likely have LTE connectivity. There seem to be a few more versions - LT25h (HSPA+), LT25c (for China), SO-01E and SOL21 (for Japan's NTT DoCoMo and KDDI respectively).

There's a number of Xperia phones yet to be announced, even a tablet, so we can't wait for its pre-IFA press conference to start (Sony will be presenting its stuff on August 29).

Sony Xperia go review: Get out, get wet

Introduction

The Sony Xperia go is not a phone to keep on a short leash. Not your kind of phone either if you'd say no to a dip in the pool because you are expecting an important call. The Sony Xperia go lets you join the fun. The midrange package that Sony just brought to the market aims to offer plenty of bang for your buck - and a bang of a time.

The Sony Xperia go official pictures

The Xperia go is a smartphone that you don't need to constantly look after. The little rugged droid will have you covered in situations very few other phones will put up with, let alone survive. Sony is yet to decide which 2011 Xperia phones will get Jelly Bean

When a Sony spokesman let it slip that the company wouldn't update its 2011 Xperia Android smartphones to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, users got upset. Big time!

But now it's time to turn that frown upside down, for Sony has released an official statement that this information was given "in error". The company says it's still researching which of the devices will actually get to receive the tasty Jell Bean update.

We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned.

This is great news for owners of 2011 Xperia devices like the Xperia Arc and Xperia Mini Pro. All there's left to do now is wait and believe in Sony, though at that rate, we wouldn't expect ay update earlier than the holiday season.

The tough Sony Xperia go lands at the office, stands in front of our camera

The Sony Xperia go is here and is ready to get the GSMArena review treatment. The rugged droid will be eyed by many as it seems like one of the best smartphones you can take to the beach with you.

The Xperia go is descendant of the Xperia Active, a tough little droid, which we met (and loved) at the end of last year. The new smartphone fixes two of the main shortcomings of its predecessor by offering a larger 3.5? LCD at the front and a beefier dual-core processor under the hood, so it’s certainly an interesting package.

The Sony Xperia Go is IP67 certified meaning it can withstand water up to 1 meter for under 30 minutes and is completely dust resistant. Additionally, the smartphone can handle the occasional knock and drop without being seriously hurt thanks to its reinforced glass.

Here’s our video of the Sony Xperia go in action.

As you heard we are not particularly fond of the Sony Xperia go back panel, but overall the smartphone feels really snappy and seems to provide a solid smartphone exeprience.

The Sony Xperia Go at HQ

We’re on the already working on a full-fledged review of the Sony Xperia go so stay tuned.

Sony ST21i Tapioca to be named Xperia Tipo when launched

The budget oriented Sony ST21i Tapioca already leaked once a while back but it's only now that we get to see its retail name - conveniently revealed by the Indonesian Telecom regulator.

Sony Xperia Tipo will be the retail name for Sony's upcoming smartphone, which is bound to bring Android ICS to the masses.

The handset will sport a Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset with a single-core Snapdragon CPU clocked at 800 MHz and Adreno 200 GPU, a 3.2" HVGA screen, and a 3MP camera. You can check out some live photos of the mini droid in our article about the previous leak.

First sample photos from the Sony Xperia GX appear

The first camera samples from the 13MP camera of the Sony Xperia GX are out (through unofficial means, but still). The shots themselves are taken with an pre-release unit and indoors under not-so-good lighting, so it's too early to be talking image quality, but this leak still holds some very interesting details.

First off, the photos were taken at the DoCoMo Smartphone Lounge where a demo unit of the Xperia GX was available. The shots have 4128 x 3096 resolution, which falls short of 13 million pixels. The EXIF data reports an F/2.4 aperture and 4mm focal length.

Leaked sample shots from the Sony Xperia GX

The device's model is listed as "SO-04D" - matching the model number of NTT DoCoMo's device - but the person who took the shots claims the device on display was actually the rumored international version of the Xperia GX (the one with the Xperia logo above the screen).

Sony is still mum on whether the GX (and the SX too) will see an international launch. And it's odd that the international version would be displayed at the DoCoMo lounge. So, it goes without saying that a non-Japanese Xperia GX is still only a rumor.

Xperia S Android 4.0 update arriving by late May

Everyone and their grandmother by now has lamented the lack of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the Xperia S. Why would Sony want to launch a flagship phone in 2012 without the latest version of Android is beyond us. They promised an update in future but never gave any concrete dates. However, it seems that you won't have to wait too long now to get the update.

While there is still no official confirmation, one of the members of Sony support staff commented on their forum that the official Android 4.0 update for the Xperia S will start rolling out by late May/early June. As usual, he mentions that not all phones will get it simultaneously but that's the general time period by which you can expect to get an update for your Xperia S.

Sony Xperia ST26i leaks for the first time

Yesterday the Sony LT29i Hayabusa leaked in a blurry shot. Shortly after that the official announcement came.

Today we have another Sony leak for you as the first images of the Sony ST26i surfaced. Obviously its an Xperia smartphone running on Android, but that's about as much as we can tell you about the specs. Unlike the Japan-bound duo unveiled earlier, though, this one keeps the capacitive keys instead of relying on on-screen buttons. Lets hope the ST26i wont be released with Gingerbread as the Xperia S and its smaller siblings.

Sony ST26i

There is one more interesting thing about the Xperia ST26i its the first Sony smartphone to lack the green globe logo since Sony purchased Ericsson's share in the joint venture.

We guess the announcement should happen soon.
