Samsung Galaxy S III mini preview: First look

Introduction

The Samsung I8190 Galaxy S III mini is like a nostalgic return to the roots for the highly successful Galaxy S franchise. Quite similar to the original Galaxy S specs-wise, the new SIII mini aims to get as much of the Galaxy S III's personality into a smaller package that's easy on the thumb - and pocket.

The original Samsung Galaxy S III is currently the smartphone to beat, but to many it's too large of a slab to handle. A strong point can be made that a large screen is a must for a great browsing experience or video watching on the go, but not everyone is willing to put up a with the body size such a screen implies.

Samsung Galaxy S III mini official photos

The Galaxy SIII mini is ready to deal a serious blow to the competition in the midrange, by offering a more compact (and cheaper!) way to get the premium smartphone experience. An ambitious goal it is, but Samsung isn't afraid of a challenge.

Samsung I8190 Galaxy S III mini at a glance:

  • General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/2100 MHz, HSDPA 14.4 Mbps

  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar

  • Dimensions: 121.55 x 63 x 9.85 mm, 111.5 g

  • Display: 4" 16M-color WVGA (480 x 800 pixels) Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen

  • Chipset: 1GHz dual-core processor, Mali-400MP GPU, 1GB RAM

  • OS: Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean); TouchWiz UX

  • Memory: 16 GB of inbuilt storage, microSD card slot (up to 32 GB)

  • Camera: 5 megapixel auto-focus, face and smile detection; 720p (1280 x 720) video recording at 30fps

  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, stereo Bluetooth 4.0, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS and GLONASS, 3.5mm audio jack, stereo FM radio with RDS, NFC

  • Misc: built-in accelerometer, multi-touch input, proximity sensor, Swype text input

Actually, the spec sheet is not even half as exciting as the SIII's. The mini version has the unmistakable styling of the flagship but that's about where it stops. At first glance, it's much closer to the original Galaxy S. In fact, it looks like Samsung is merely publishing a remastered version of their 2010 hit single.

Well, we hate to jump to conclusions. Perhaps, there's more than meets the eye.

We'll only know whether Samsung managed to get enough bang out of the middling specs when we are done with this preview, so let's waste no more time and get going. The hardware inspection starts right after the break.

Huawei's first WP8 smartphone to be called W1

Huawei is yet to join the Windows Phone 8 game, after Samsung, Nokia and HTC showcased their WP8 smartphone offerings.

According to the latest rumors coming from China Huawei's first WP8 smartphone will be called the W1. Given that the information comes from no other than Richard Yu (Huawei's Chairman of devices), we have every reason to believe that it's accurate.

The Huawei W1 is rumored to start shipping in November or December in three color versions - black, pink and white. It should cost around $317. The device is rumored to be announced on September 25, but take that with a pinch of salt as Huawei has previously hinted that it will be announcing its WP8 smartphones right before their market release, so it might take another two or three months before the W1 goes official.

There's still no word on the specs of the Huawei W1 but we'll keep an ear on the ground and keep you posted when those become available.

Motorola new RAZR family hands-on: First look

Introduction

Motorola advertised its On Display event as the day's main event, which was rather bold considering that the world's number two cellphone manufacturer announced its WP8 lineup. However, seeing the kind of hot hardware that the Google-owned company announced, its arrogance might not be completely unfounded.

Motorola treated us to three new members of the RAZR family - the Motorola RAZR M mid-ranger, the Motorola RAZR HD flagship and the Motorola RAZR HD MAXX battery life champion. The first two of those will be available both as global GSM devices and on the Verizon network, while the RAZR HD MAXX will initially be exclusively available as a part of the Verizon DROID family.

The Motorola (DROID) RAZR HD impresses with its large 4.7" edge-to-edge Super AMOLED display of 720p resolution. The back of the device is made of Kevlar, but this time it wraps around the edges of the headset too. The camera offers 8MP stills and 1080p video recording.

The LTE-touting Motorola (DROID) RAZR HD is powered by a Qualcomm chipset with a dual-core Krait CPU, 1GB RAM and Adreno 225 GPU. It will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box with an upgrade to Jelly Bean scheduled for Q4.

For the most part, the Motorola DROID RAZR HD MAXX is identical to its sibling, but it upgrades the already impressive 2,530 mAh battery to the hard to believe 3,300 mAh. It also ups the available internal storage from 16GB to 32GB. Naturally, that comes at the expense of a few extra millimeters around the waist, but the RAZR HD MAXX still measures the very respectable 9.3mm of thickness.

Finally, the RAZR M is Motorola's answer to those asking for phones to remain as compact as possible. It packs a smaller 4.3" qHD 540x960px Super AMOLED Advanced screen and measures just 122.5x60.9x8.3mm. It still manages to offer LTE connectivity, an 8MP camera capable of doing 1080p video and an S4 chipset with a 1.5GHz dual-core Krait CPU.

We'll handle the Motorola DROID RAZR HD right after the break, with the DROID RAZR MAXX and the DROID RAZR M following on pages 3 and 4.

Is this the first real video of the iPhone 5?

As is always the case, the closer we get to an iPhone launch, the more leaks there are. Some attribute these as purposely released by Apple generate more hype for their imminent launch.

Whatever the case, this latest video confirms what we've heard about the iPhone 5, and it might be the real deal.

Speaking of leaks, a white version of the iPhone 5 was also leaked at the start of the month, this time by Taiwanese popstar Jimmy Lin.

Lin posted on Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter and Facebook in one), that the new iPhone is indeed longer but thinner than its predecessor, created of an aluminum alloy which makes it feel the same as the 4S in hand. He also confirmed that it will use 19-pin connector rather than the current 30-pin one.

Of course, take both of these with the usual grain of salt.

Whether either of these proves false almost doesn't matter at this point, since Apple are set to officially announce the new device on September 12th.

Thanks, mick!

LG launches world’s first 84-inch, 4K 3D TV in Korea

LG has launched the world’s first 84-inch ‘Ultra Definition’ 4K 3D TV in Korea, with plans to release in international markets soon. This gigantic panel has a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160, which is basically four times the resolution of a 1080p display.

The TV, which is named 84LM9600, comes with LG’s Cinema 3D and a whole bunch of other features with 3D in the name. You also get a pair of passive 3D glasses for viewing the 3D content.

While on paper, this display sounds fantastic, but the reality is that there is very little 4K resolution content available at the moment, which means most of the time you’ll be looking at 1080p content quadrupled to its original size, on an 84-inch panel. This, along with the 25 million won (US$22,105) price tag, makes the whole thing hard to swallow. But if you’re someone who has loads of money to spend and want the absolute best TV to watch all the videos you shot using your RED Scarlet camera then this should make a great buy.

The LG 84LM9600 is out in South Korea right now and will be available in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America starting in September.

The first full 007 Skyfall trailer is here

MGM released a teaser of the new Bond movie last May. It’s just today though when we get to see the full-length trailer of 23rd Bond movie called Skyfall.

We recently saw Daniel Craig land with a parachute at the Olympics opening event and visitors were treated with a 30-second teaser for Skyfall. Now here is the official trailer.

As you probably know MGM barely survived a bankruptcy and it’s now good to see it back in action with the 007 movies. 007 Skyfall premiere is scheduled for the end of October – just in time for the 50th anniversary of the first Bond movie ever made.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preview: First look

Introduction

Google used its I/O 2012 conference in San Francisco to unveil the latest release of Android. Carrying the version number 4.1, the new Android Jelly Bean is supposed to come as more of a polish to Ice Cream Sandwich, than a major game changer.

Don't think for a second though, that Jelly Bean doesn't have anything interesting to offer. On the contrary - the latest Android version brings a truckload of new features, and should help noticeably improve the overall user experience. Here goes the full breakdown:

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean changelog:

  • Project Butter has brought smoother and faster feeling user interface

  • Improved notification center with expandable and actionable notifications

  • Updated widget behavior

  • Improved camera and gallery apps for easy photo snapping and sharing

  • Improved keyboard behavior with with word prediction

  • Added Accessibility options with support for external Braille input

  • Enhanced Android Beam allowing transfer of photos and video

  • Offline Voice recognition and typing

  • Google Voice search is more intelligent than ever

  • Updated Google Search user interface

  • Google Now adds automatic information feeds to your device (weather, traffic, sports, etc)

  • Bi-Directional text and additional language support

  • Truly high-resolution contact photos

  • USB audio output and HDMI multichannel audio output

  • App encryption and Smart App updates

The list might not be too long, but Android ICS was arguably the most feature-rich platform already, so major changes were hardly required. With Android easily the most popular mobile OS out there, Jelly Bean's task is to solidify its lead by polishing the user experience.

The Project Butter sounds like a great start, but it's certainly not the only trick up Jelly Bean's sleeve. The revamped notification center, the updated widgets and the new natural language searches should really make a difference to end users, while the improved Android SDK and extended API support should keep developers happy.

The question remains if every feature on the list work as advertised, so let's not waste any more time and start testing them out. User interface awaits you on the next page.

First sample photos from the Sony Xperia GX appear

The first camera samples from the 13MP camera of the Sony Xperia GX are out (through unofficial means, but still). The shots themselves are taken with an pre-release unit and indoors under not-so-good lighting, so it's too early to be talking image quality, but this leak still holds some very interesting details.

First off, the photos were taken at the DoCoMo Smartphone Lounge where a demo unit of the Xperia GX was available. The shots have 4128 x 3096 resolution, which falls short of 13 million pixels. The EXIF data reports an F/2.4 aperture and 4mm focal length.

Leaked sample shots from the Sony Xperia GX

The device's model is listed as "SO-04D" - matching the model number of NTT DoCoMo's device - but the person who took the shots claims the device on display was actually the rumored international version of the Xperia GX (the one with the Xperia logo above the screen).

Sony is still mum on whether the GX (and the SX too) will see an international launch. And it's odd that the international version would be displayed at the DoCoMo lounge. So, it goes without saying that a non-Japanese Xperia GX is still only a rumor.

Sony Xperia ST26i leaks for the first time

Yesterday the Sony LT29i Hayabusa leaked in a blurry shot. Shortly after that the official announcement came.

Today we have another Sony leak for you as the first images of the Sony ST26i surfaced. Obviously its an Xperia smartphone running on Android, but that's about as much as we can tell you about the specs. Unlike the Japan-bound duo unveiled earlier, though, this one keeps the capacitive keys instead of relying on on-screen buttons. Lets hope the ST26i wont be released with Gingerbread as the Xperia S and its smaller siblings.

Sony ST26i

There is one more interesting thing about the Xperia ST26i its the first Sony smartphone to lack the green globe logo since Sony purchased Ericsson's share in the joint venture.

We guess the announcement should happen soon.

Motorola Mobility releases first quarter financial results

Motorola Mobility just announced its first quarter financial results for 2012 and things aren't looking so well.

The total revenue in this period was of $3.1 billion (out of which $2.2 billion were from mobile devices) but the company faced a net operating loss of $85 million, $24 million more than same quarter last year. Motorola managed to ship 8.9 million mobile devices, out of which 5.1 million were smartphones.

Motorola is still in the process of being acquired by Google, for which the latter paid $12.5 billion. Considering that this acquisition was purely for the patent rights, we wouldn't be surprised if Google sells it off again to someone else if Motorola continues to bleed money.

Is this the first legit Samsung Galaxy S3 press shot?

So far Samsung has been keeping its next flagship under wraps quite successfully. We've only seen blurry shots of the externals and supposedly, those are not even the final designs.

Props to Samsung for their success so far, but could this be the first serious leak of the handset?

What we have on our hands today is an image that looks a lot like what the Samsung Galaxy S3 is supposed to look like, judging by some of the more substantial leaks from the past.

Update: The image is confirmed as old and has surfaced before. It's certainly a mockup. Sorry about that, move along.

Now this photo didn't come with any extra info on the handset, but the leaked specifications for the device so far detail a 4.6 or 4.8-inch SuperAMOLED screen of 720p resolution, Samsung's latest quad-core Exynos chipset, and an 8 or 12 megapixel camera to go with those. There should also be an extra beefier battery to make the phone last a bit longer.

Now as usual, take this thing with a pinch of salt. But our guess is leaks won't get any better than this before the official announcement. Even if it's some user-land fan art, we still appreciate the effort and it's a job nicely done.

Thanks for the tip, Ali.

Samsung I8530 Galaxy Beam preview: First look

Introduction

You don't see many of those around. Perhaps you're looking in the wrong place. As always, we're glad to be of service but, no, the Samsung i7410 didnt ring any bells. It was the good old Phone Finder again.

Anyway, this is how it started - if you'll excuse our hazy knowledge of the Asian market. The first projector phone was a dumbphone, but the whole thing wasn't such a dumb idea after all.

There was obviously potential waiting to be unleashed and no one could've done that better than Android. Now, wind back to 2010 and the first projector smartphone. And by the way, the Samsung I8520 Galaxy Beam was not just another smartphone - 3.7" AMOLED was quite the business back then. Not to mention the 8MP stills and 720P video.

But enough history. Here's what the new Galaxy Beam is all about.

Samsung I8530 Galaxy Beam at a glance:

  • Built-in 15-lumen nHD projector

  • General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, 3G with HSPDA 14.4 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps

  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar phone

  • Dimensions: 124 x 64.2 x 12.5 mm, 145.3g

  • Display: 4.0" 16M-color TFT capacitive touchscreen, 480 x 800 pixels

  • CPU: Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, Mali-400 GPU

  • Memory: 768 MB RAM, 8GB storage, microSD card slot

  • OS: Android OS, v2.3.6 Gingerbread with TouchWiz 4.0

  • Camera: 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash; face detection, geo-tagging; 1.3MP front-facing camera

  • Video recording: 720p video recording

  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP, standard microUSB port, GPS receiver with A-GPS, 3.5mm audio jack

  • Battery: 2,000 mAh

  • Misc: Accelerometer, proximity sensor, Swype text input, Polaris Office document viewer/editor

Now, we dont need to tell you the original Galaxy Beam didnt quite catch on. OK, a projector phone is not something you can expect to make huge money off. But it's not an idea either that you just throw in the bin.

So, Samsung's decision to stick with their plan gives us the I8530 Galaxy Beam. Given the original projector phone barely made an appearance outside the MWC venue, this is not what you'd call a grand return.

 Samsung I8530 Galaxy Beam Preview
 Samsung I8530 Galaxy Beam Preview

The Samsung Galaxy Beam at HQ

It's a measured and cautious second try and we don't think Samsung can be blamed for playing it too safe. The truth is the new Galaxy Beam is actually a step down from what the original offered two years ago. AMOLED has been swapped for LCD, the inbuilt storage cut in half, the 8MP camera relegated to 5MP and the WVGA pico projector reduced to nHD.

Of course, the bump in processing power is welcome. The new Beam has a dual-core engine and double the RAM. The projector makes up for the lost resolution with increased brightness - 15 lumens, up from the original 10.

Ultimately, it wasn't Samsung's goal to upgrade the original. They wanted something doable instead, a sensible projector/smartphone combo and, not least, more affordable. It will take a full review to see if the I8530 Galaxy Beam is up to it. But this quick preview of an early pre-production unit should give us a good idea of what to expect.
