Nikon announces the D600, the smallest and cheapest full-frame DSLR on the market

Looks like full-frame sensors are suddenly in vogue. Yesterday we saw a whole bunch of Sony cameras with full-frame sensors, including one camcorder. Now Nikon has announced the D600, which packs a full-frame sensor in what is the smallest, lightest and cheapest camera on the market right now.

The Nikon D600 uses a 24.3 megapixel 35.9 x 24mm full-frame CMOS sensor. The camera uses Nikon’s EXPEED 3 image processor and is capable of shooting at 5.5 fps.

Other features include ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to IS 50-25,600), 39 point AF system, 0.13 second startup time, 1080p video recording in 30, 25 or 24 fps and 720p in 60, 50 or 30 fps, uncompressed video out via HDMI, dual SD card slots, HDR mode and a 3.2-inch, 921k dot LCD.

The Nikon D600 will go on sale on September 18 and will retail at $2,099 (body-only) or for $2,699 with the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens.

Nikon found to have been working on Android-based Coolpix S800 camera

Cameras running Android is not exactly a new concept. Polaroid showcased the SC1630 earlier this year at CES and even Samsung is said to have been working on a similar device.

Now we are hearing that Nikon too is working on an Android based camera and there is some proof to back that claim as well. This information comes courtesy an Indonesian Communication filing from July 2012 that shows a product named Coolpix S800c (or S800), which is said to be running Android 2.3, Gingerbread.

According to Nikon Rumors, the expected features of this camera include a 25-250mm lens, 3.5-inch OLED display, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi. They also say that the camera will run all apps from the Google Play Store, although that seems unlikely. The possible announcement date for this product is said to be August 22.

While you may not exactly be able to play games on this camera, what the inclusion of Android means is that you will be able to install and use photo editing and sharing applications on the camera instead of having to depend upon the built-in features. If this category of cameras takes off, we might even see more specialized apps appear on the Play Store. It should also make it easier for people to install custom firmware on these cameras. This also means that the future of dedicated digital cameras might not be as bleak as everyone thinks.

Nikon launches 1 J2 mirrorless and Coolpix L610 superzoom cameras

Nikon has unleashed two new cameras on the digital photography world. The first one is the newest member of the Nikon 1 family, which currently includes the V1 and the J1.

The J2 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that is mostly similar to the older J1 with minor modifications. It has the same 10.1 megapixel CMOS sensor up front in a compact, rangefinder-style body but the display on the back has been upgraded and now has 921k dots in the same 3.0-inch size. The J2 also has a new Creative Mode that lets you add visual effects to your images, a metallic body and comes in a new orange color.

The Nikon 1 J2 camera with the 10-30mm lens (27-80mm in 35mm equivalent) will be available in September 2012 for the suggested retail price of $549.95.

A new 1 NIKKOR 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 lens (30-75mm in 35mm equivalent) will also be available in late September 2012 and will have a suggested retail price of $189.95. Additionally, the new WP-N1, the underwater case for both the Nikon 1 J1 and the Nikon 1 J2, will be available in September 2012 and will have a suggested retail price of $749.95 (that’s quite steep).

Nikon Coolpix L610

The other new camera is the Coolpix L610 superzoom point and shoot camera. It has a sizable 14x optical zoom and several other features such as a 16 megapixel BSI sensor, 25-350mm equivalent lens and 1080p30 video recording. On the back, the L610 has a 3.0-inch, 460k dot display. The L610 runs on double AA batteries, which means you can carry around spare and easily swap them when they run out.

The Nikon COOLPIX L610 will be available in September 2012 for a suggested retail price of $249.95 in Red, Black and Silver.
