Nokia Lumia 505 teased ahead of launch in Mexico

The Mexican retailer Guerrero Mvil teased an upcoming Nokia smartphone, called Nokia Lumia 505. It will be exclusive (at least initially) to the network of local carrier Telcel and should become the cheapest Nokia WP device to date.

The Lumia 505 specs are mostly unknown for now - all the carrier's Facebook account gave us was the 8 megapixel camera. We can also see that there's not going to be a flash of any kind alongside the camera.

However, the Windows key at the front features the old WP logo, so it's all but certain that the smartphone will be running some Windows Phone 7 version.

Now a closer look at its homescreen shows the support for resizable live tiles, so it's obvious that the smartphone will be running Windows Phone 7.8 out of the box.

There are also rumors of a 4" WVGA display, 800MHz CPU, 4GB of storage and 256MB of RAM, which make sense, but are yet to be confirmed. It would be a strange if Nokia invested too much effort in the design of a smartphone that is going to be exclusive to a Mexican carrier, so the Lumia 505 is most probably little more than a redesigned Lumia 510.

Guerrero Movil promised to reveal more information on the Nokia Lumia 505 in a week, so we won't have to wait long to find out.

Nokia Lumia 830 leaks in China, surprises everyone

Leaked images of what is allegedly another upcoming WP smartphone from Nokia, namely the Lumia 830, surfaced.

Before you get too excited, the Lumia 830 will not be a beefier variant of the upcoming Lumia 820, but rather a successor to the Lumia 710. Given that no spec sheet was given, we're holding off on putting too much validity to that peculiar naming convention.

For now, what we do known about the Lumia 830 is that it will come in five colors, and run on Windows Phone 8.

Nokia outs Q3 2012 results, reports reduced operating loss

Nokia's financial results for Q3 2012 are out and things are still looking grim for the Finns, which have reported an operating loss of $754 million.

If you recall, for each of the last three quarters Nokia had to report north of a $1 billion loss. That's why the company had to undertake some unpleasant job cuts and we guess the results are starting to show up.

There's more bad news for Nokia, too, as the company only managed to push 76.6 million featurephones, from which the Asha lineup accounted for 6.5 million units. The really bad news is that Lumia sales have dropped to 2.9 million (from a total of 6.3 million smartphones shipped) compared to last quarter's 4 million. The Windows Phone 8 launch just couldn't come soon enough for the Finns, which are now facing a do or die situation.

The report also shows that Nokia Siemens Networks managed to make a profit of $238.5 million, managing to helping the company in these hard times of transition to Windows Phone. Speaking of that, Microsoft also chimed in with their $250 million cheque for the quarter.

Lastly, Nokia reports cash reserves of $4.66 billion, which doesn't compare particularly favorably to the $6.64 billion the company had in its pockets at the same point of last year. In the report, the company issued a warning towards investors that the upcoming Q4 quarter will still be bumpy. The reason, as Stephen Elop puts it is "product transitions and our ramp up plan for our new devices."

Apple iPhone 5 display compared to Nokia Lumia 920, has its “Most advanced” title taken away

Back at the Apple iPhone 5 announcement event, Phil Schiller claimed that the new iOS flagship has the world’s most advanced display yet. It appears, however, that this might not be entirely true, as one Nokia fan is keen to point out. He did a spec-by-spec comparison of the iPhone 5 and the Lumia 920 and the latest Apple smartphone didn’t really manage to impress there.

The PureMotion HD+ screen on the Nokia Lumia 920 packs some impressive technology and it’s hard to argue with the facts listed in the following slides.

This is not the first case of the Apple’s iPhone 5 announcement event writing checks that the smartphone cannot cash, either. You might remember the slimmest smartphone claim, which also turned out to be inaccurate.

Nokia fakes Lumia 920 PureView video, issues an apology for it

Yesterday, Nokia announced the Lumia 920 with a PureView camera, except here, PureView did not mean the pixel oversampling that we saw on the 808 PureView but rather the use of optical image stabilization to achieve steadier low light photos and videos.

To demonstrate this effect, Nokia released a video where they compared the effect of having and not having optical image stabilization side by side, the implication being that the video was shot on the new Lumia 920.

Turns out, that was not the case, as was later discovered by Pocketnow.com as well as The Verge, who found a reflection of a camera crew in a van using what was clearly a professional camera (or at least most definitely not the Lumia 920) to shoot the 'OIS ON' part of the video.

This meant that what we were supposed to believe was Nokia's super awesome optical image stabilization at work was just actually just a professional video camera.

Now we expect some amount of deception in advertisements but that's for fancy press images. While talking about sample images and video we expect them to be the actual content captured from the device otherwise it defeats the purpose, which is why it was a disappointment to see Nokia fiddle with that. Nokia should have let their brand new product do the talking instead of relying on a professional tool to make things look nicer. Or at least provide a warning in the video so we know what we are really looking at.

Fortunately, Nokia has been quick to issue an apology, saying that the video was not shot on the Lumia 920 but rather "simulated" to give an idea as to what OIS on the Lumia 920 would look like. They have also released another video and this time it actually is from the Lumia 920, they say.

The new video looks impressive and makes us wonder why Nokia didn't use the actual phone to shoot the previous video. Maybe it would not have been as stable as the professional camera but it'd have still looked good and more importantly, be truthful.

Nokia Asha 305 review: Smarter 2gether

Introduction

The Nokia Asha 305 is easily one of the cheapest phones with two SIMs and a touchscreen, the closest Android being almost twice as expensive. Price may be the biggest advantage this phone has over the competition but you'd better be prepared for more than a few surprises.

Nokia Asha 305 official photos

With the new Asha touch interface, an updated browser and access to the Nokia store, the Asha 305 promises a near smartphone-like experience. And that's on top of the dual-SIM capabilities, including a hot-swappable SIM slot and a dedicated SIM management app that lets you configure how calling, texting and data are juggled between cards.

Key features

  • Dual-band GSM, GPRS, EDGE

  • Dual SIM dual stand-by, SIM hot-swap

  • S40-based Asha touch interface

  • 3" WQVGA resistive touchscreen, ~155 pixel density

  • Multi-touch in the gallery and Nokia Maps

  • Display auto-rotation

  • Nokia Browser 2.0

  • Nokia store and 40 EA games for free

  • 2 MP camera

  • microSD card support (up to 32 GB)

  • Complimentary 2 GB microSD card in the box

  • Bluetooth v2.1 (with A2DP)

  • Standard microUSB port, charging

  • 1100 mAh Li-Ion battery

  • Excellent loudspeaker performance

Main disadvantages

  • Interface slows down at times, due to low RAM

  • Poor screen quality

  • Resistive touchscreen feels awkward

  • Fixed-focus camera

  • QCIF video recording

  • No smart dialing

A package like the Asha 305 is built on the not so solid ground of compromise. You get a low-resolution resistive screen and the still camera and camcorder are of the lowest quality. Yet, even the resistive screen can do a multi-touch trick: the so-called multipoint touch enables pinch zooming in the gallery.

The actual touchscreen experience is on a level unseen before in S40 - soft keys are almost completely out of the equation. Of course you'll have to bear with occasional lags and poor response on the resistive unit. On the other hand, the pull-down notifications and quick settings, along with the advanced side-scrollable homescreen make this feel a lot more convenient and user-friendly.

Even little things like screen auto-rotation and a landscape QWERTY keyboard make a lot of difference compared to last time we saw a full-touch S40 on the Nokia C2-03.

There will be more on the interface coming up, but not before we've had a proper look at the hardware. We start with unboxing on the next page.

Nokia completes Scalado technology acquisition

Today Nokia announced that they have completed the acquisition of technologies, developers and intellectual property from imaging software specialists Scalado. The Finns first hinted at this deal last month, and they are now ready to finalize it.

As you may know, due to some reasons that the two companies have chosen not to disclose, Nokia is not actually buying the Scalado company, but only its personnel and technology. From a users' perspective there's little difference though, as the cool software features developed by the Swedish-based company will soon be making their way to Nokia smartphones.

In fact, Nokia Lumia users have already started seeing the benefits of the Nokia Scalado partnership with the camera extras update that was delivered at the end of June.

With hints getting stronger and stronger that we might see the first PureView-packing Lumia smartphone this Fall, the completion of this deal could only lead to more good news for cameraphone lovers. Imagine the power of that huge sensor combined with impressive software tricks like Scalado Remove and Scalado Rewind and Smart Group Shot.

The Nokia Lumia 900 display takes hits with a hammer and a nail, lives to tell the story

After the Nokia Lumia 800 survived a mini ice age, we get to see if the Lumia 900 is going to pass the nail-to-the screen test.

Granted, this is not an industry standard test, but the guys over at TechCraver decided to give it a whirl anyways to see how much the Lumia 900's screen can handle. And by the looks of it, it can take a lot of punishment.

Firstly, the Lumia 900 display got a direct hit with a nail, and because apparently that wasn’t enough, it was used as a hammer afterwards. If you aren’t faint of heart, you may see it all in video below.

Impressive, right? This is yet another example that Corning’s Gorilla Glass can indeed survive quite a lot. Stephen Elop was so impressed, that he even called to congratulate the guys on the successful test.

Dual-SIM Nokia 110 and 112  go official, to cost under €40

Nokia just unveiled two new additions to its lineup of ultra-basic Dual-SIM featurephones. The Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 are compact-sized S40 devices targeted at emerging markets and users on a tight budget, who want to minimize their monthly bills by taking advantage of two different carrier plans.

Both the Nokia 110 and 112 feature dual-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity and microSD card slots for expanding their memory by up to 32GB. They pack VGA cameras at the back and easy-swap SIM slots on the side for replacing one of the SIMs without opening up the phone.

The Nokia 110 and 112 can store custom settings for up to five different SIM, which are automatically applied when the corresponding SIM is inserted. The main difference between the two dual-SIM phones is battery backup - the 112 packs an ample 1400 mAh juice pack, while the 110 makes do with a 1020 mAh battery.

In case you like the idea of a super simple featurephone that costs pennies, but have no use for a second SIM slot, you'd be glad to know that Nokia will be releasing single-SIM versions of the two handset as well. They will be called Nokia 111 and Nokia 113 and will be identical to the 110 and 112 in their specs sheet

Before local taxes or operator subsidies the Nokia 110 will cost around 35, while the Nokia 112 will cost about 38. The Nokia 110 is expected to ship in Q2 2012 while the Nokia 112 will be available from the third quarter of this year.

Nokia PureView 808 headed to Mexico soon

Nokia has just overruled its plans to exclude North America from the PureView 808 markets. Mexico is getting the camera/smart phone hybrid in a few weeks, probably in the end of May or the beginning of June.

The confirmation comes straight from the Spanish version of Nokia Conversations.

Recently we also noticed the PureView 808 passing through FCC, so the tiny hope that it might also make it to the United States has become a little less so. We are sure that Nokia won't mind giving their sales a boost.

In case the USA remains cut from the PureView 808 markets after all, Mexico will be there to satisfy that demand as well.

Nokia PureView 808 enters FCC, gives US tiny hope

Back in March we learned Nokia PureView 808 wont be coming to North America understandable, given Nokias decision to pull off Symbian smartphones from this market.

Since the N9 skipped the NA market, we had no reason to expect the Finns to have a sudden change of heart for the 808 PureView. Not to mention that the US is a key Lumia market, so Nokia prefers to focus all its attention that way.

And then suddenly the Nokia PureView 808 lands at the FCC and secures permission to enter the US market. So however tiny it is, there is a chance it enters the North American (or at least the US) market after all.

Nokia PureView 808 torn apart FCC

At the very least the photos that accompanied the FCC report let us take a peak inside the mighty cameraphone and see what its internals look like.

Nokia confirms PureView 808 is coming in May

Yesterday there were some speculations the PureView 808 release might be delayed for June or later. Today Nokia is putting an end to all of those rumors the 41MP camera-smartphone PureView 808 is coming in May as it was promised all the way back in February.

The first countries to get the PureView 808 include Russia and India currently Nokias most loyal markets. The full list of countries and dates will be announced shortly.

Nokia and Carl Zeiss made another announcement today about their extended partnership. This means both companies will continue to work tightly together so they can bring you even better mobile cameras than the PureView 808s. Nice!

Nokia released lots of camera samples taken with the PureView 808 a few days ago. You can find them right here.

Nokia 808 PureView new samples arrive, look stunning

Nokia is apparently not all about the Amazing Everyday and still finds time for its 808 PureView cameraphone monster. Today we got some fresh samples from the 41 megapixel to feast our eyes on. It's not the first time they're doing it, but you won't hear us complaining.

Nokia 808 PureView samples

Most of the photos have been downsized to 5 megapixels, which supposedly allows us to see the best of the PureView technology and they are really impressive. The dynamic range and the amount of fine detail resolved is splendid and while we can't say anything about their accuracy, colors certainly look nice. Not to mention the shallow depth of field, which is normally next to impossible to achieve with a cameraphone.

There are also a few full-res samples, where the "per-pixel" sharpness levels isn't quite as impressive, but the overall resolved detail is mind-blowing. We'd say that the full-res samples are about as sharp when viewed at 100% as the current best cameraphones. The thing is there's three to four times more pixels on the 808 PureView.

In other words nothing currently on the market comes even close to what the 41 MP sensor inside the Nokia 808 PureView offers.

Check out the full gallery over here.

Nokia 808 PureView surfaces on pre-order in the UK

We've already seen Nokia 808 PureView pre-orders pop up elsewhere but now we're talking the UK.

Clove.co.uk now offers the ultra-high-megapixel cameraphone but the pricetag is a bit harder to swallow than the one we saw from Nokia Italy. With the VAT included, the UK price amounts to 538.80, which is roughly 655, while Nokia Italy's asking price is 599.

We hope other UK retailers chime in on that one and make a more palatable offer for the Nokia 808. A Dutch retailer, for instance, has a pre-order listed at 565.

Clove doesn't mention a release date but the Nokia Italy pre-order had May as a projected time frame for the launch of the highly anticipated cameraphone.

Nokia Lumia 900 costs $217 to make, thanks its cost-reduced design

The materials for Nokia’s flagship and blockbuster Lumia 900 cost $209, according to iSuppli’s preliminary teardown assessment.

That, iSuppli reckons, is a result of the Lumia 900's cost-reduced design and the close cooperation between Microsoft, Qualcomm and Nokia, which mimics Apple’s approach to device development.

Including the manufacturing cost, the Lumia 900's total cost rises to $217. This is a significantly lower than the $243.50 that the similarly-spec’d Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket costs to make.

And if you take the retail price of the Lumia 900, which as of April 2012 is $450, Nokia and Microsoft earn $233 for of each Lumia 900 sold. Of course, this doesn’t include additional expenses like software, royalties, licensing, taxes etc.

Free Xpress-on covers and discounts for the Nokia Lumia 710

Nokia have been busy revitalizing their brand image in the US, originally the with the introduction of their Windows Phone-endowed Lumia 710 and more recently its bigger brother the LTE-capable Lumia 900. It looks as though people are forgetting about the phone that started it all however and as such Nokia have announced a pair deals for owners and prospective buyers of the 710.

For starters, those who can prove that they recently purchased a Nokia Lumia 710 will be able to register for a second Xpress-on colored back cover. The extra rear plates are available in cyan, fuchsia, yellow and white and are designed to suit either version of 710 (black or white bodied). In order to prove eligibility, users will have to register their IMEI number, phone number and list a purchase date in order for Nokia to send them an extra back cover, free of charge.

The second part of the Lumia 710's two-pronged attack is the price drop on a two-year contract to free, from $49.99. With the competent hardware of the Lumia 710, considering its mid-range credentials, that's not too shabby, but its not all smiles, as prospective customers will only be able to take advantage of this discount via means of a $50 mail-in rebate.

We expect that, for the meantime at least, this price drop is a temporary move on T-Mobile's part, but we suspect they won't leave it too long before permanently making the Lumia 710 gratis on contract. Lets see if our hunch is right in the coming months.

Have either of these offers caught your attention, or are Nokia still struggling to appear on your radar? Follow this link to register for a free back cover if you're eligible too.

Nokia 306 graphic leaks out from a manual, raises questions

A graphic, taken from the manual of a prototype has leaked out, showing us the touch screen sporting, Nokia 306. Curiously enough however, there is no information on the OS, which the upcoming Nokia will be running.

The device could be running a Symbian version, due to its support for multiple home screens, along with a status menu, located at the top of the screen. On the other hand, the two button configuration below the display, and its resolution of 240x412 pixels point into an updated S40. So does the name of the device, which strongly suggests that the Nokia 306 belongs to the Asha family.

The leaked specs of the Nokia 306 include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi (b/g), MicroSD card slot, Micro USB port, FM Radio, and AV Out. The battery is Nokia BL-4U with a 1100mAh capacity.

Nokia Lumia 900 for AT&T came over, here goes the hands-on

The LTE sporting Nokia Lumia 900 for AT&T could very well be one of the most important devices in the history of the Finnish company. Developed specifically with the lucrative U.S. market in mind, the Windows Phone handset will likely show the world if the marriage between Nokia and Microsoft is a success or, well… , you know what.

In terms of specifications, the newcomer does not differ a lot from its global sibling – the Nokia Lumia 800. The Lumia 900 adds a bigger, 4.3? Super AMOLED screen with WVGA resolution, LTE network connectivity, as well as a larger battery with 1830mAh capacity. The rest of the specs are practically identical for both phones.

Naturally, the the Nokia Lumia 900 has grown significantly in measures, compared to its sibling, thanks to its bigger screen. They are 127.8 x 68.5 x 11.5 mm, while its weight is 160 grams. The smartphone features the gorgeous polycarbonate unibody and design, seen for the first time in the Nokia N9.

Nokia Lumia 900 live photos

On the software side of things, the Nokia Lumia 900 holds no surprises, thanks to Microsoft’s strict requirements. Windows Phone 7.5 Mango is on board, along with a couple of Nokia exclusive apps. Check it out in action below.

We have a full review of the Nokia Lumia 900 for AT&T well under way, so keep an eye on our main page for it.

Nokia Lumia 900 tops Amazon charts, Titan II nowhere in sight

Just two days after it went on sale, the Nokia Lumia 900 managed to climb to the top of the Amazon best seller charts.

The black version of the phone is the one leading the parade, while the cyan edition takes a respectable fifth place. The two Nokia Lumia 900 versions are also easily the two most popular AT&T devices currently available on Amazon.

The Lumia 900 also tops Amazon's Movers and Shakers list with the cyan variant boasting 394% growth.

And what about the HTC Titan II, which launched alongside the Nokia flagship you ask? Its $100 higher asking price obviously prevented it from coming even come close to the Lumia 900's blooming success and it didn't even make the top 20.
