Black HTC One S finally lands on T-Mobile US's shelves

HTC One S has been on sale on T-Mobile for months now, but (unfortunately) the black colored version hasn't been available across the Atlantic until today. Potential users will finally be able to pick up the device in black with red accents.

In order to please the overly patient, the Big Magenta currently offers the black version of the HTC One S for free after a mail-in rebate. In case you order it today, the carrier will also throw in a free case for you.

The HTC One S is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, so it is quite snappy by todays standards. With the device currently being offered for free, we do believe it makes for quite a sweet an upgrade for both first-time and experienced users.

T-Mobile bound, Windows 8 running Samsung handset leaks

It appears that Windows Phone fans who are customers of T-Mobile US are in for treat in the near future. A Windows Phone 8 running Samsung smartphone, carrying the T-Mobile specific model number SGH-T899 has leaked out in a user agent profile.

The smartphone in question is likely the previously rumored Samsung "Odyssey." Its reported specs include a dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and a gig of RAM, 4.65" 720p display, 8MP snapper, and NFC connectivity.

The device's most important feature however, will likely be the presence of LTE network capacity. The latter will make the Samsung "Odyssey" one of the first real 4G devices bound for the Big Magenta.

There is no further info on the upcoming Samsung smartphone at the moment. As always, we'll tell you as soon as we find out more on the subject.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ported to the T-Mobile G1

The opensource nature of the Android OS means new updates are often found running on older phones before they officially hit the newer devices.

Keeping with that tradition, today we are about to see the very latest version of Android running on the very first commercially sold Android phone. Yes, you are about to see Jelly Bean running on the T-Mobile G1.

This hack was put together by the folks at SoCal Devs and they have details on how to go about doing it on xda-developers forums. While it’s not exactly Project Butter (more like Project Stutter) nor is it particularly stable, the phone does seem to be able to run it somehow.

If you still have this phone lying around you can try this hack and have some fun with it. Just don’t expect to be able to use it on a daily basis.

HTC One S for T-Mobile hands-on

The Big Magenta exclusive HTC One S is currently the top dog in the wireless carrier’s smartphone lineup. We did get a chance to spend some quality time with the device, so here go some impressions for you.

Hardware wise, there is practically no difference between the T-Mobile flavored HTC One S and its global version, save for the former’s support for T-Mobile’s superb 42Mbps HSDPA network. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset with two Krait cores, clocked at 1.5GHz on board, a gig of RAM, and 16GB of built-in memory, which cannot be expanded further. The screen is a 4.3” AMOLED unit with qHD resolution.

The camera is an 8MP unit, capable of capturing 1080p videos. You can see some samples from it, together with a quick comparison to the 16MP monster of the HTC Titan II here. A secondary unit with VGA resolution is located at the front of the device.

Visually, the T-Mobile HTC One S is absolutely identical to its global sibling, save for the carrier’s logo, located at the front of the device. The handset’s measures have also remained intact. They are 130.9 x 65 x 7.8 mm, while the phone’s weight tips the scale at 119.5 grams. Sadly, the folks at T-Mobile have decided not to offer the black color scheme on the HTC One S. Grey is the only color option you will have.

There are no surprises on the software side of the T-Mobile offering either. The smartphone runs Android 4.0.3 ICS, covered in HTC Sense 4.0. Beats Audio is naturally on board as well, and so is the usual amount of preinstalled apps from T-Mobile apps. Thankfully, Google’s latest Android version lets you disable the unwanted ones and thus keep you app launcher with acceptable levels of magenta colored icons.

Here is a video of the HTC One S for T-Mobile in action.

With T-Mobile offering the best way to experience a 3G network in the United States, the HTC One S is easily the best tool for the task. In case LTE is not your cup of tea, the $199.99 asking price for the smartphone will be money well spent.
