Black HTC One S finally lands on T-Mobile US's shelves

HTC One S has been on sale on T-Mobile for months now, but (unfortunately) the black colored version hasn't been available across the Atlantic until today. Potential users will finally be able to pick up the device in black with red accents.

In order to please the overly patient, the Big Magenta currently offers the black version of the HTC One S for free after a mail-in rebate. In case you order it today, the carrier will also throw in a free case for you.

The HTC One S is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset, so it is quite snappy by todays standards. With the device currently being offered for free, we do believe it makes for quite a sweet an upgrade for both first-time and experienced users.

The Apple iPhone 5 is finally here, we get the review under way

The latest Apple iPhone is in our office and it’s ready to try and impress us. It’s thinner, much lighter, and faster in every aspect and although similar in shape, it feels completely different than the iPhone 4S.

The Apple iPhone 5 is powered by the new A6 chipset, which makes even the snappy iPhone 4S feel rather sluggish in comparison.

The new iPhone is very sleek, with the superb aluminum finish feeling great to the touch. The device doesn’t feel much bigger than the iPhone 4S in hand, which is partly due to the lighter and thinner form factor. The display looks bigger, but the change isn’t too drastic so all iOS users should be right at home.

The iPhone 5 compared to the 4S • Retail box

The new A6 chip inside the iPhone 5 makes opening applications very snappy – everything from loading pages in the browser, to games and even built-in apps like Calendar, Clock, Notes, etc.

Here’s our unboxing and user interface video of the iPhone 5, which also features a side-by-side comparison of the two latest iOS smartphones.

We’re doing all we can to bring you the full iPhone 5 review as soon as possible. Meanwhile, feel free to check out our iOS 6 review, which should bring you up to speed with the software goodies brought by the latest release of the Apple platform.

Quad-core Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 finally lands in our office, shows what its capable of

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 got off to a rocky start after its official announcement at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this year, after which it returned to the company’s R&D drawing board for a specs overhaul.

And several months later, here it is – the brand new Galaxy Note 10.1 with more powerful innards ready to take over the tablet scene. Or so it thinks.

Here’s a quick rundown. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is powered by the same Exynos 4412 chipset with a quad-core 1.4GHz processor and Mali-400MP GPU found in the Galaxy S III. And thanks to the 2GB of RAM, you get a truly multitasking-ready device.

However, the news aren’t so rosy in terms of screen. It’s a 10.1-inch PLS TFT screen with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. Samsung are not using a Super AMOLED panel and the resolution is nowhere near FullHD.

Despite this little nitpick, the Galaxy Note 10.1 comes with a ton of useful features such as a microSD card slot, LED flash for the 5MP camera and 3G connectivity. At the front, there’s a 1.9MP camera for video chatting.

But the pièce de résistance of the Galaxy Note 10.1 is its special stylus called S Pen. With its help you can quickly write down notes, draw a funny picture or even make advanced modifications to a photo.

The latter is done thanks to the Adobe Photoshop Touch app, which comes for free on the tablet. It takes the Galaxy Note 10.1 to a whole new level, allowing professional as well as regular users to make photo adjustments while on the go.

Measuring 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.9 mm and weighing 583 grams, the tablet is going to find a comfortable place in nearly every bag and you won’t break any sweat carrying it around.

Samsung has thrown in almost everything its got in terms of software. The Galaxy Note 10.1 runs Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich with TouchWiz 4.0 sprinkled on top. It adds really useful features to the stock Android experience like Mini apps, useful widgets and a few essential Samsung apps like S Memo, S Chat and more.

Check out our Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 hands-on video below.

We are tirelessly working on the Galaxy Note 10.1 review, hopefully, you will be able to enjoy it in the coming days.

Motorola Cliq 2 finally gets Android 2.3 Gingerbread update

Motorola has finally released Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its year and a half old Cliq 2 smartphone.

All T-Mobile users who are still holding on to theirs QWERTY-packing Cliq 2 handsets can now enjoy the goodies brought by the now dated Gingerbread.

Better late than never, right? Unfortunately the update won’t be available OTA. You must download it and install it via USB connection, which is a little less user-friendly.

Anyway, if you still want to update your Cliq 2 with Gingerbread and get some bugfixes, better battery life and some other improvements, just head over to this link and follow the instructions.

Coming in loud and clear: Sprint introduce HD Voice call quality improvements, finally

The evolution of the phone and subsequently the smartphone has been wild and uncertain, remember features like push-to-talk, me neither. Such functionality never really sat right in the grand scheme of mobile telephony and with the Swiss army knife approach that app-capable phones now employ, calling is only a single piece of the overall experience.

HD Voice on Sprint with the HTC Evo 4G LTE

That being said, despite all the improvements to data speeds for mobile web browsing, better camera functionality and improved email support, call enhancements haven’t really seen the same levels of care and attention, something that is now slowly changing, finally.

Manufacturers like RIM have built part of their reputation on their products’ excellent cell reception and their tendencies to latch onto signal like there’s no tomorrow, but signal strength alone isn’t enough, call quality is something that OEMs and carriers need to work on together in order to provide the best they can.

Mobile users have generally grown used to mediocre call quality due to the expanded functionality their phones offer elsewhere, but it seems that some carriers are finally saying, “no more,” Sprint being the latest party to join the fray.

Despite being a long overdue upgrade, Sprint have confirmed that with the launch of the HTC Evo 4G LTE (check out our hands-on here), they will also be able to offer up the latest call clarity technology which they have dubbed HD Voice.

The service is said to provide “fuller, more natural-sounding and less fatiguing voice quality and should reduce troublesome background noises often found in a cafe or on the street. Users should expect to identify voices and hear every word, better than ever.”

Sprint plan to utilize the a new EVRC-NW (narrowband/wideband) codec over their LTE network in order to achieve this superior call quality and that’s all well and good. Taking the roll of devil’s advocate for a second though, do we really need this? As was mentioned earlier, calls are now just another feature on the increasingly long list of things smartphones are capable of, they’re still prominent, but less so than ever before and so for many, improved call quality won’t register as a major selling point, especially with apps like Viber and Skype offering alternative ways to hold a conversation whilst you’re on the move (connectivity permitting of course).

Such functionality and the appeal of said functionality boils down to the type of mobile user you are. Business users and socialites might be more inclined to appreciate such a feature, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t benefit everyone. Does this register for you and if you plan on picking up the new HTC Evo 4G LTE, does HD Voice play a part in your decision?

For those on the other side of the pond, Orange UK are one of the few carriers to make any worthy note of improved call quality and although not benefiting from an LTE network like Sprint is just yet, they still boast HD Voice on a growing number of handsets, a list of which you can find here.
