Google updates Street View with more than 250,000 miles of new imagery

Google has substantially updated its Google Maps Street View service, updating 250,000 miles of roads around the world.

The Street View coverage is now extended to cover Macau, Singapore, Sweden, the U.S., Thailand, Taiwan, Italy, Great Britain, Denmark, Norway and Canada. Google is also launching special collections in South Africa, Japan, Spain, France, Brazil and Mexico, among others.

Google says this is the largest update it has ever released for Street View and I am inclined to believe them. Now, you can view even more attractions all around the world from the comfort of your couch. That is, until you save enough money for this nice trip to Spain you’ve been dreaming of.

You can check out the cool places Google has added to its Street View by following this link.

Google updates Chrome for desktop and Android

Google has released updates for Chrome across the board with a new version for Windows, OS X and Android respectively. On the desktop, Chrome, now updated to v22, gains the Mouse Lock API, which lets you play games inside the browser window without having to worry about the mouse pointer escaping the window or bumping into the sides. Basically the pointer will be locked to the window of the browser. You can try it out with this demo.

Other changes include additional enhancements for the upcoming Windows 8 and improvements for HiDPI or Retina display users on the new MacBook Pro.

On the Android side, Chrome, now updated to v18, adds support for devices running on Intel’s x86 architecture. Right now there are only a handful of those, with the Motorola RAZR i probably being the only one running Ice Cream Sandwich right now (and thus can support Chrome).

Although not a particularly fresh piece of news, Google also updated the iOS version of Chrome a few days ago and added support for iOS 6 and the new iPhone 5.

Here is what Apple, Samsung and Google think on the verdict from the patent infringement trial

As you may know, the Apple vs. Samsung case reached its conclusion last week, and as a result Samsung has to pay Apple $1.05 billion in damages.

And in case you’re wondering how the two companies feel about it, here go the internal memos sent to the respectful companies’ employees. Google also threw in its two cents on the matter.

The Apple note is sent by Tim Cook himself and says that Apple pursued the protection of its values, rather than going for money or patents. He is pleased that the jury found Samsung’s copying “willful”.

Today was an important day for Apple and for innovators everywhere.

Many of you have been closely following the trial against Samsung in San Jose for the past few weeks. We chose legal action very reluctantly and only after repeatedly asking Samsung to stop copying our work. For us this lawsuit has always been about something much more important than patents or money. It’s about values. We value originality and innovation and pour our lives into making the best products on earth. And we do this to delight our customers, not for competitors to flagrantly copy.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the jury who invested their time in listening to our story. We were thrilled to finally have the opportunity to tell it. The mountain of evidence presented during the trial showed that Samsung’s copying went far deeper than we knew.

The jury has now spoken. We applaud them for finding Samsung’s behavior willful and for sending a loud and clear message that stealing isn’t right.

I am very proud of the work that each of you do.

Today, values have won and I hope the whole world listens.

Tim

Samsung, on the other hand, points that courts in the UK, Netherlands, Germany and Korea had ruled the opposite of what the NDCA had. The company even goes on to state that Apple won’t win the hearts and minds of consumers by abusing patent law, instead of innovating – although I can see Apple fans accusing Samsung of just such a lack of innovation. It’s a matter of personal perspective, I guess.

[Internal Memo] Regarding the Jury Verdict in California

On Friday, August 24, 2012, the jury verdict in our trial against Apple was announced at the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The following is an internal memo that reflects Samsung’s position regarding the verdict:

We initially proposed to negotiate with Apple instead of going to court, as they had been one of our most important customers. However, Apple pressed on with a lawsuit, and we have had little choice but to counter-sue, so that we can protect our company.

Certainly, we are very disappointed by the verdict at the US District Court for the Northern District of California (NDCA), and it is regrettable that the verdict has caused concern amongst our employees, as well as our loyal customers.

However, the judge’s final ruling remains, along with a number of other procedures. We will continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted.

The NDCA verdict starkly contrasts decisions made by courts in a number of other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Korea, which have previously ruled that we did not copy Apple’s designs. These courts also recognized our arguments concerning our standards patents.

History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth, when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation.

We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritize innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt.

Google also shared its thoughts after the trial. The search giant wanted to make it clear that the ruling doesn’t relate to the core Android OS.

The court of appeals will review both infringement and the validity of the patent claims,

Most of these don’t relate to the core Android operating system, and several are being re-examined by the US Patent Office.

The mobile industry is moving fast and all players – including newcomers – are building upon ideas that have been around for decades. We work with our partners to give consumers innovative and affordable products, and we don’t want anything to limit that.

We guess there are many sides to every story.

Google Nexus 7 now available in France, Germany and Spain

Google has expanded the availability of their Nexus 7 tablets to three additional markets. Users in France, Germany and Spain will now be able to purchase the Nexus 7 from the Google Play Store.

The 8GB model is priced at €199 ($249) and the 16GB model is priced at €249 ($312), which, as you can see, is a bit higher than what it costs in the US. Also, it doesn’t seem like you will get any extra credit, such as the $25 you get in the US. (Turns out you do get €20 as store credit in Europe). Lastly, the Play Store in these other countries also doesn’t have some of the contents such as magazines that you will find in its American counterpart.

Despite that, these are still good prices and many people will be glad that they now have the option of purchasing the tablet officially, extra credit be damned. Hopefully, Google will expand to other markets shortly.

Google Nexus 7 goes on pre-order in France, to visit Germany in September too

Asus-made Google Nexus 7 tablet isn’t doing too good a job at sneaking quietly around Europe after its official UK launch. First, Asus themselves broke its cover by posting on their Asus Italy Facebook page that the 16GB version will launch in early September at €250. Now, the Jelly Bean tablet has been spotted in France and Germany too.

French site Fnac is already taking pre-orders for the Nexus 7 and it seems that Asus is setting up a corner in a Berlin store. Oddly, all sightings so far have been of the 16GB version.

Fnac seems to have jumped the gun on the Nexus 7 pre-orders but Darty and Boulanger will also be offering the tablet. The latter two have yet to put it up on their sites, but Fnac isn’t shy about dispensing info – they expect the 16GB version to be in stock starting September 3, with a price tag of €250.

An intern from the German tech site Android Next stumbled onto something interesting too – he was in a store in Berlin after closing yesterday where he saw an Asus table being set up. The store employees let it slip that it’s for the Nexus 7.

Today, after some more poking around the site reports that a 16GB Nexus 7 will launch on September 3, for the same €250 price. They couldn’t confirm if the tablet will come with Play Store credit or not (in the US you get $25 credit).

Of course, all this info is unofficial (even the Asus Italy Facebook post should be taken with a grain of salt). But you can be almost certain that the pricing info will turn out correct in the end.

Thanks to Frank Ritter for the tip!

Google Nexus 7 review: Catching Fire

Introduction

Google's Nexus line has welcomed its first tablet, the Nexus 7. With a promise of solid specs for a low price, the ASUS-made tablet is poised to storm the Android tablet market and maybe even steal a chunk of Apple iPad's market share.

Asus Google Nexus 7

Google Nexus 7 tablet by ASUS

The Nexus 7 is powered by one of the two chipsets at the heart of current flagship phones and tablets - NVIDIA's Tegra 3. You get a quad-core CPU and good graphics muscle at a time when the only quad-core tablets around are pricy 10" models.

The 7" screen might be a compromise to some, but others will see an advantage in the excellent portability. 7" tablets fit in a coat pocket or purse. Plus, WXGA resolution and 216ppi pixel density sound more than reasonable. For comparison's sake, an Amazon Kindle Fire offers 170ppi, and even the new iPad isn't too far ahead with its 264ppi.

Some corners had to be cut to get a quality product at Google's intended price point. Here's the summary of what ASUS and Google offer for $200/$250.

Key features

  • 7" 16M-color IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen of WXGA resolution (1280 x 800 pixels), scratch-resistant Corning glass

  • NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset: quad-core 1.3GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor; 1GB of RAM; ULP GeForce GPU

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

  • 8/16 GB of built-in memory

  • 1.2 MP front-facing camera

  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot

  • Bluetooth; Android Beam

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • GPS with A-GPS support; digital compass

  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor, gyroscope sensor

  • 4325 mAh Li-Po battery

  • Incredibly attractive pricing

Main disadvantages

  • The screen is a bit washed out and has poor sunlight legibility

  • Non-expandable memory

  • No USB mass storage or TV-out

  • No mobile data-enabled version

  • Front-facing camera only

  • Disappointing audio output

The Nexus 7 sure has its downsides, but it makes a killer tablet for web browsing, email or gaming. With the Samsung Galaxy Nexus price set at $350 (one of the cheapest dual-core droids, especially considering the screen size and resolution), it looks like Google's Nexus line has transformed from developer-oriented devices to some of the best Android buys.

But there's more to it than just bang for the buck - a Nexus gadget is a ticket to fast updates to the latest Android OS, an untouched Android at that (some don't really like vendor skins) and a great developer community pushing the gadgets beyond what Google had in mind for them.

So, is smart money on the Nexus 7 tablet or were there too many corners cut to make the price? Is the Kindle Fire shaking in its boots?

The specs look promising despite a few stinging omissions, but it's now for our tests to answer those questions. The trials start on the next page.

Chrome OS 20 released, adds native support for Google Drive and Google Docs

Google’s operating system for notebooks, Chrome OS, has recently been updated to version 20.

This new release is a step towards Google’s goals to integrate their recently announced Google Drive cloud storage service more deeply into the Chrome platform, as well as offline support for Google Docs.

The update brings the new Aura UI to the original Chromebook, the CR-48, which will also receive some new open-source touchpad drivers, which should address some of the touch responsiveness issues which have plagued the Google device since its release.

The new update should be streaming out to devices over the Chrome OS release channel over the next few days.

Google releases Chrome and Drive for iOS

Who said that Google's I/O conference isn't an important event for iOS users? Google just announced that it's adding iOS support to its Drive cloud storage service and Chrome web browser.

Google's own cloud storage, which launched back in April, is already available for download at the iTunes store, while Chrome is still on the way, but should arrive later today.

Google Drive is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 5 or later and gives users 5 GB of free storage with the option to expand it for a fee. It will also boast the offline editing feature we just told you about.

Google Chrome will be available to iPhone and iPad users running their devices on iOS 4.3 or later. It still hasn't debuted at the App Store, but Google said that should happen later today. The app supports Chrome sync so that if you're using Chrome on your desktop computer too, you'll have all your bookmarks, searches, etc. with you on your iDevice. This should help boost that impressive number of active users even further.

Google Nexus 7 gets benchmarked, results are unsurprisingly good

There has hardly been any doubt that the freshly announced Google Nexus 7 would be a solid performer on the benchmark arena. After all, NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chipset with four CPU cores is a well known powerhouse by now. However, we couldn’t help but be curious about the way Google’s slate would stack up against the well-established, higher priced players on the tablet market.

As you probably know by now, the Google Nexus 7 CPU cores are clocked at 1.3GHz each – that’s a tad less than the typical 1.5GHz, which we’ve seen on other Tegra 3 devices. In order to make up for the lost MHz, the slate runs the brand new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, served the way Google does it best – in the purest possible fashion.

With a number of optimizations implemented in the latest Google OS, coupled with the powerful hardware of the Nexus 7, it is no surprise that the expectations towards the slate’s benchmark performance ran quite high. Here go the results.

Sunspider • Browsermark

The scores of the Nexus 7 in Sunspider JavaScript Benchmark and Rightware Browsermark are downright impressive. The slate recorded the best result in Sunspider and came second behind the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity in the Browsermark. Keep in mind that these two benchmark scores are solidly influenced by the new OS, which the tablet boots.

GLBenchmark 2.1

GLBenchmark 2.1 has been run in several modes on the Nexus 7, showcasing the hardware capabilities of the tablet. Except for the offscreen 720p mode, which is dominated by the Apple iPad, the ASUS made Google Slate performed on par with the most powerful tablets available at the moment.

Google Chrome almost doubles its active users, now at impressive 310m

Google Chrome is among the topics of discussion at day two of Google’s I/O developer conference. According to Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps over at Google, Sundar Pinchai, Chrome has 310 million active users.

This makes Chrome the most popular web browser in the world. Year over year the jump of active users has almost doubled from the 160 million back in 2011.

Google’s Gmail isn’t doing too shabby either amassing around 425 million active users – a number that was 350 million back in January of 2012.

Google Docs to get offline editing with an update later today

At Day 2 of Google I/O which is all about Chrome, Google announced that offline editing is about to become available for Google Docs.

Edits are made offline and are later synced, when you connect to the web. Clay Bavar, Director of Product Management for Google Apps demonstrated the functionality on a Nexus 7 tablet and it worked like a charm.

The feature will become available with an update for the Google Docs app later today and you will be able to test it out for yourselves. The functionality is only going to support regular text documents initially, with spreadsheets and presentations coming soon.

Google Play Store can now charge your movie, music and book downloads to your phone bill

The Play Store has had the ability to charge your app downloads to your phone bill in certain markets and on certain carriers.

Now Google has expanded that to include movies, music and ebooks, basically everything that can be bought off the Play Store, as well.

In the US, this feature is only available to users on AT&T and T-Mobile’s network but it will be coming soon to Sprint customers as well. In Japan, it is available for DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank customers. Other countries include Germany (T-Mobile International, Vodafone), Italy (Vodafone), Korea (KT, SKT, LGU+), Spain (Vodafone) and UK (T-Mobile International, Vodafone).

Hopefully, Google will add other regions soon. It will also be nice if they could add the option to gift content to others.

Google Maps for Android updated with scale bar, elevation data

The Google Maps Android App has been updated with several new features, including a scale bar ala the desktop version, as well as plus/minus buttons, which you can be visible on-screen.

There’s also a nifty new Labs tool, which allows you to see the elevation difference between two points.

The first two features need to be enabled from the settings menu in order to show up, while the measure tool can be accessed if you’ve enabled the relevant Labs feature. The scale bar cannot be adjusted like on the desktop version, but it does change based on your zoom level.

In case you’re not familiar with them, the Labs feature in various Google applications allow you to access some nifty additional functionality, which is still being tested. Check out the new Google Maps version for Android here.

March brings 27% growth for Google+ with 61 million visits

It isn’t secret to anyone that Facebook, with its more than 500 million active users is the undisputed social network champion, but this doesn’t stop Google from trying to keep up. The search engine giant reports a steady growth, reaching 61 million visits for March.

That’s an impressive 27% more than previous months and with Larry Page claiming 100 million active users, Google+ has grown a great deal since its launch in June last year.

However, it’s unknown exactly how Page defines a user as “active”, since comScore put his words under scrutiny by releasing data, which shows that Google+ users spent just 3.3 minutes on the social network for January. If you think it’s not that bad, the average time users spend on Facebook is 7.5 hours for the same time. Yikes!

Regardless, Google+ is growing at a steady pace, according to the graphic above stating information from Experian Hitwise. Do you think Google+ has what it takes to eventually become as popular as Facebook or do you believe nothing can beat Zuckerberg’s creation?
