Samsung selling Galaxy Note Olympic Edition in UK

You must be aware by now that Samsung is the official sponsor of the 2012 Summer Olympics to be held later this year in July in London. Now we have come across a picture of this rather attractive special edition Galaxy Note being sold in the UK.

Called the Galaxy Note Olympic Edition, the phone comes with a special back cover. The one pictured here is the Great Britain version that comes with a glossy black cover with the Union Flag on it.

I’m assuming there will soon be other such versions of the phone sold in other regions of the world with their respective flags but for now we just have this one picture uploaded on Twitter by this particular phone’s owner. We’ll keep you posted if we find more of these. Also, do share if you see some yourself.

The Nokia Lumia 900 display takes hits with a hammer and a nail, lives to tell the story

After the Nokia Lumia 800 survived a mini ice age, we get to see if the Lumia 900 is going to pass the nail-to-the screen test.

Granted, this is not an industry standard test, but the guys over at TechCraver decided to give it a whirl anyways to see how much the Lumia 900's screen can handle. And by the looks of it, it can take a lot of punishment.

Firstly, the Lumia 900 display got a direct hit with a nail, and because apparently that wasn’t enough, it was used as a hammer afterwards. If you aren’t faint of heart, you may see it all in video below.

Impressive, right? This is yet another example that Corning’s Gorilla Glass can indeed survive quite a lot. Stephen Elop was so impressed, that he even called to congratulate the guys on the successful test.

First sample photos from the Sony Xperia GX appear

The first camera samples from the 13MP camera of the Sony Xperia GX are out (through unofficial means, but still). The shots themselves are taken with an pre-release unit and indoors under not-so-good lighting, so it's too early to be talking image quality, but this leak still holds some very interesting details.

First off, the photos were taken at the DoCoMo Smartphone Lounge where a demo unit of the Xperia GX was available. The shots have 4128 x 3096 resolution, which falls short of 13 million pixels. The EXIF data reports an F/2.4 aperture and 4mm focal length.

Leaked sample shots from the Sony Xperia GX

The device's model is listed as "SO-04D" - matching the model number of NTT DoCoMo's device - but the person who took the shots claims the device on display was actually the rumored international version of the Xperia GX (the one with the Xperia logo above the screen).

Sony is still mum on whether the GX (and the SX too) will see an international launch. And it's odd that the international version would be displayed at the DoCoMo lounge. So, it goes without saying that a non-Japanese Xperia GX is still only a rumor.

HTC Evo 4G LTE review: Ticking all boxes

Introduction

The Sprint Wireless exclusive HTC Evo 4G LTE is the latest smartphone to come from the close and rather prolific collaboration between the carrier and the Taiwanese manufacturer. The handset is bound to take its spot as the flagship for Sprint's newly launched LTE network.

While its name might lead you to believe otherwise, the HTC Evo 4G LTE is rather closely related to the HTC One X for AT&T. It sports practically the same internals as its polycarbonate sibling, but with a few extra touches, which are bound to make a lot of HTC One X owners pretty jealous.

HTC Evo 4g Lte
HTC Evo 4g Lte
HTC Evo 4g Lte

HTC Evo 4G LTE official photos

The abovementioned extras include a microSD card slot, a dedicated camera button, as well as a metal kickstand, which harks back to the glory days of the original HTC Evo 4G. In short, the HTC Evo 4G LTE offers the same top of the line functionality, which we came to love in the HTC One X, while addressing most of its shortcoming.

Here goes the full list of features, which the newcomer has to offer.

Key features

  • LTE/CDMA network support

  • 4.7" 16M-color Super LCD 2 capacitive touchscreen of HD resolution (720 x 1280 pixels); Gorilla glass

  • Superb build quality

  • Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC Sense 4.0

  • 1.5 GHz dual-core Krait CPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 chipset

  • 1 GB of RAM and 16GB of storage; microSD card slot; 25GB of free Dropbox storage for 2 years

  • 8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash; face detection and geotagging; dedicated button

  • 1080p and 720p video recording @ 30fps with stereo sound

  • 720p front-facing camera for video-chat

  • Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and DLNA

  • GPS with A-GPS

  • NFC connectivity with Google Wallet pre-installed

  • Stereo FM radio with RDS

  • Accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor and auto-brightness sensor

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v4.0

  • MHL TV-out (requires MHL-to-HDMI adapter)

  • Smart dialing, voice dialing

  • HD voice capable

  • DivX/XviD video support

  • HTCSense.com integration

  • HTC Portable Hotspot

  • Office document editor

  • Beats audio enhancements

  • Built-in metal kickstand

  • 2000 mAh battery with impressive endurance

Main disadvantages

  • Only available in the United States

  • Sprint's LTE network is still in early stages of deployment

  • Non-user-accessible battery

  • The glossy plastic cover on the device's back is a fingerprint magnet

On paper the HTC Evo 4G LTE is the best equipped smartphone to hit the US market so far this year. The handset simply packs everything an Android junkie can possibly demand, wrapped up in solidly built, good looking package.

In fact, we really can't help but wonder why arguably the best smartphone that HTC currently has to offer is available exclusively from the third largest carrier in the United States. As thing stand now, it might actually be a while before you get to enjoy Sprint's LTE network in your area - it is still in early stages of rollout. The silver lining regarding this issue is that the HTC Evo 4G LTE showed a rather impressive battery life when connected to Sprint's 3G network. As for the small, glossy plastic cover on the back - it is a small price to pay for having a microSD card slot on board.

HTC Evo 4g Lte
HTC Evo 4g Lte
HTC Evo 4g Lte

HTC Evo 4G LTE live shots

As always, we are going to kick off the review with an unboxing, followed by a design and build quality inspection.

Editorial: You might notice that this review is shorter than usual and doesn't include all of our proprietary tests. The reason is it has been prepared and written far away from our office and test lab. The HTC Evo 4G LTE is a US-only phone and it's unlikely it will be making rounds on the Old Continent. Still, we think we've captured the essence of the phone in the same precise, informative and detailed way that's become our trademark. Enjoy the good read!

Samsung S Voice leaks alongside some widgets, apps and ringtones from the Galaxy S III

First Flipboard lost its Galaxy S III exclusivity and is currently available for all Androids, now S Voice and various apps and widgets from the Galaxy S III followed suit.

The credit for leaking the highly anticipated S Voice goes to XDA member PlaYOuT, who extracted it and made it available for everyone’s downloading pleasure. Soon before him, however, ithehappy went a step further and made available a couple of widgets, apps and ringtones from Samsung’s new flagship.

Now AccuWeather, GTalk, YouTube, FM Radio, a couple of digital clock widgets and S III’s ringtones are available for download from the source links below. There is also an explanation on how to run them on your device. Keep in mind your Android has to be rooted and run Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to user reports, S Voice is working without hiccups, but just like us, they are not heavily impressed with Samsung’s virtual personal assistant. Follow the links below to install the leaked Galaxy S III software goodies.

Thanks for the tip, anonymous

Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III review: S to the third

Introduction

Today is no ordinary day for the GSMArena test track, which is about to see the Bugatti Veyron of smartphones do the rounds in an attempt to beat the lap record of its predecessor. Samsung have spared no effort to protect the Galaxy S III against any odds. What we get as a result is the most amazing blend of performance and features we are likely to see this year.

Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III
Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III
Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III
Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III
Samsung Galaxy S III official shots

The Koreans took their time with the new flagship, giving the predecessor a full year at the helm. But they were taking no chances and they've got the spec sheet to prove it. With most of the hardware made by Samsung themselves, the Galaxy S III is an endless list of mind-blowing numbers. The quad-core beast packs a 720p Super AMOLED screen and a massive battery, but keeps its slim waistline.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Here's the underwater part:

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM and quad-band 3G support

  • 21 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA support

  • 4.8" 16M-color Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen of HD (720 x 1280 pixel) resolution; Corning Gorilla Glass 2

  • Android OS v4.0.4 with TouchWiz launcher

  • 1.4 GHz quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU, Mali-400MP GPU, Exynos 4212 Quad chipset, 1GB of RAM

  • 8 MP wide-angle lens autofocus camera with LED flash, face, smile and blink detection

  • 1080p HD video recording at 30fps

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n

  • GPS with A-GPS connectivity; GLONASS support, Digital compass

  • 16/32/64GB internal storage, microSD slot

  • Accelerometer, gyroscope and proximity sensor

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • microUSB port with USB host and TV-out (1080p) support, MHL, charging

  • Stereo Bluetooth v4.0

  • FM radio with RDS

  • Great audio quality

  • Super slim at only 8.6mm

  • 2MP secondary video-call camera

  • Full Flash for the web browser

  • NFC support

  • Document editor

  • File manager comes preinstalled

  • Extremely rich video and audio codec support

  • Impressively large 2100 mAh battery

Main disadvantages

  • All-plastic body of dubious aesthetics

  • No dedicated camera key

  • microSIM slot

  • S Voice is hardly as functional as ads might make you believe

A long list of assets and a rather short list of cons speak volumes about the amount of effort that went into building the Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III. Were they just trying to improve each and every aspect of the user experience over the Galaxy S II, or was creating the ultimate droid their goal all along? The more we think about it, the more it looks the same.

The Samsung I9300 Galaxy S III at ours

Samsung are in a way raising their own bar yet again. But the competition hasn't been idle either. We've seen proof already that the Galaxy S III is a smartphone that thrives on a challenge. It now has the stage all to itself. You could call it a curtain call if the story of the Galaxy S III wasn't just about to begin.

Dual-SIM Nokia 110 and 112  go official, to cost under €40

Nokia just unveiled two new additions to its lineup of ultra-basic Dual-SIM featurephones. The Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 are compact-sized S40 devices targeted at emerging markets and users on a tight budget, who want to minimize their monthly bills by taking advantage of two different carrier plans.

Both the Nokia 110 and 112 feature dual-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity and microSD card slots for expanding their memory by up to 32GB. They pack VGA cameras at the back and easy-swap SIM slots on the side for replacing one of the SIMs without opening up the phone.

The Nokia 110 and 112 can store custom settings for up to five different SIM, which are automatically applied when the corresponding SIM is inserted. The main difference between the two dual-SIM phones is battery backup - the 112 packs an ample 1400 mAh juice pack, while the 110 makes do with a 1020 mAh battery.

In case you like the idea of a super simple featurephone that costs pennies, but have no use for a second SIM slot, you'd be glad to know that Nokia will be releasing single-SIM versions of the two handset as well. They will be called Nokia 111 and Nokia 113 and will be identical to the 110 and 112 in their specs sheet

Before local taxes or operator subsidies the Nokia 110 will cost around 35, while the Nokia 112 will cost about 38. The Nokia 110 is expected to ship in Q2 2012 while the Nokia 112 will be available from the third quarter of this year.

Xperia S Android 4.0 update arriving by late May

Everyone and their grandmother by now has lamented the lack of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the Xperia S. Why would Sony want to launch a flagship phone in 2012 without the latest version of Android is beyond us. They promised an update in future but never gave any concrete dates. However, it seems that you won't have to wait too long now to get the update.

While there is still no official confirmation, one of the members of Sony support staff commented on their forum that the official Android 4.0 update for the Xperia S will start rolling out by late May/early June. As usual, he mentions that not all phones will get it simultaneously but that's the general time period by which you can expect to get an update for your Xperia S.

Watch how this Tizen developer tablet runs Android apps without breaking a sweat

Tizen is now officially into its version 1.0 era and development has been going great. However, when it becomes available for everyone to use, it probably won’t have 500,000 apps at its disposal.

That’s why Samsung and Intel have wittily enabled the platform to run Android applications as well. Using a special “Application Compatibility” layer, the Tizen platform, and the first tablet it powers can run virtually any app from the Google Play store.

Here’s a video courtesy TheHandleBlog, who take a dive in a Tizen developer tablet showcasing some Android apps.

Press images emerge for the Samsung Galaxy S III accessories

As you may recall from the official unveiling of the Galaxy S III last month, the new Samsung flagship is set to have a veritable slew of accessories available.

While there are no real surprises here, these official press images will give you a closer look at what sort of extras you can expect to be available for the highly anticipated phone.

The C-Pen is about the size of a standard ballpoint pen and is something akin to the S Pen from the Samsung Galaxy Note. The tip is made of a soft material which is guaranteed not to damage the screen.

The Wi-Fi display hub, also known as the AllShare Cast wireless streaming dongle, hooks up to a display via HDMI port, allowing you to wirelessly stream media from your S III.

The holder and battery charger has the ability to hold your S III (but not dock it) at an angle, while charging an an extra battery. This accessory has the neat benefit being sold with an additional battery for your S III.

The Flip case comes in both white and blue, to match both S III flavors. It replaces the back cover of the device, and folds over the screen when not in use.

Finally, the desktop dock allows you to dock the S III (unlike the holder), and has a microUSB port for charging and a 3.5mm audio port, which you can connect to an external audio device.

Notably absent are official shots of the S Pebble MP3 player, which aims to wirelessly sync music files from your device, and the wireless charging kit, which was previously announced as delayed until September.

Facebook mobile app and website layout update to show bigger pictures

Within a week of Google releasing an update for its iOS mobile app, Facebook too has released an update for its mobile apps and website that changes the way posts are displayed.

The posts are no longer displayed in a contiguous manner but instead appear in their own separate boxes. But most importantly, images now appear 3x bigger than before and span from edge to edge. Albums are also bigger now and show thumbnails for the contained images arranged in a single large grid. You can see from the first two pictures how it looks and how it looked before in the third picture.

This update is available to m.facebook.com users as well as the iOS and Android apps, and you can get it without having to update the apps.

Flipboard for Android apk leaks prematurely, brings cool news feeds to non-Galaxy S III users

Flipboard first launched for iOS devices and Android users have been hoping it’d launch for their beloved platform as well ever since. Yet it was only at the Samsung Galaxy S III announcement event last week that we finally got confirmation that droids will be having a piece of Flipboard action.

Unfortunately, the app was announced as Galaxy S III exclusive at launch, which meant the only way for you to get it is buy a Galaxy S III. Thankfully, though, one XDA user managed to extract it from the device and made it available to everyone right now. To get it, just head over to the source link below and download the apk. Once you do, transfer it to your Android device and install it (make sure you’ve enabled Untrusted sources from the Settings).

And don’t worry, it’s not malware, we tested it around the GSMArena office and it works like a charm. And if you have trouble find your way around the app itself, don’t hesitate to check out our extensive Flipboard review for guidance.

If you do install Flipboard on your droid, do not hesitate to share your impressions of it with the rest of us in the comments section below.

The wireless charging kit for Samsung Galaxy S III won’t come out until September

When Samsung announced its Galaxy S III Android flagship, it also unveiled several cool accessories that would allow you to “cut the cord” – go the wireless route on things like HDMI TV-Out (with the AllShare Cast dongle), listening to music (with the S-Pebble) and charge phone without plugging any cables with the wireless charging kit.

Well, it seems that we’ll have to wait for a part of this cable-free dream to come true as the wireless charging kit has been delayed.

Retailer MobileFun UK is reporting that the kit won’t be released alongside the Samsung Galaxy S III, which will hit the shelves in Europe at the end of this month. In fact, it won’t be until September when we’ll get to do some cable-free charging with the S III.

At least if we want to use the official accessory that is – the retailer is reportedly looking into providing third-party alternatives before Samsung finishes up whatever it needs to do before launching the wireless charging kit.

Sony Xperia ST26i leaks for the first time

Yesterday the Sony LT29i Hayabusa leaked in a blurry shot. Shortly after that the official announcement came.

Today we have another Sony leak for you as the first images of the Sony ST26i surfaced. Obviously its an Xperia smartphone running on Android, but that's about as much as we can tell you about the specs. Unlike the Japan-bound duo unveiled earlier, though, this one keeps the capacitive keys instead of relying on on-screen buttons. Lets hope the ST26i wont be released with Gingerbread as the Xperia S and its smaller siblings.

Sony ST26i

There is one more interesting thing about the Xperia ST26i its the first Sony smartphone to lack the green globe logo since Sony purchased Ericsson's share in the joint venture.

We guess the announcement should happen soon.

HTC Wildfire C live pictures are here, to be called Desire C

We first heard about HTC Golf back in March, thanks to a leaked camera sample. Then we saw a believable enough official render and we heard the phone would be called Wildfire C.

What we got today is the first live pictures of the device. It looks just like in those rendered images, but packs a different paintjob. Also, the image source claims, the smartphone will be called Desire C instead of Wildfire C.

HTC Desire C

The Desire C is rumored to feature a 3.5-inch HVGA screen, a single-core 800MHz or 1GHz processor, a 5 megapixel snapper, a front-facing video-call camera, 512MB RAM, 4 gigs of storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and a microSD slot.

The Desire C should be the HTCs most affordable droid running on Ice Cream Sandwich (with Sense UI 4.0 on top). It will probably be announced quite soon, as the release should happen by the end of June.

Kyocera shows tough Hydro and QWERTY-packing Rise ICS droids

Kyocera (who you might remember from the dual-screened Echo) has come up with a pair of tough Androids - the Hydro and the Rise. Both are CDMA phones and run Google's latest, Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Kyocera Hydro is a standard slab measuring 115 x 62 x 12.8 mm and weighing 120g. It has a 3.5" HVGA IPS LCD screen, a 1GHz processor (Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon chipset) with 512MB of RAM, a 3.2MP camera, a 1,500mAh battery and a 2GB microSD card in the box (plus 2GB of built-in storage).

The Hydro has IP57 protection rating, which means it can survive under a meter of water for up to 30 minutes and withstand water jets.

The Kyocera Rise has pretty much the same specs as the Hydro, though it's slightly thicker at 113.0 x 60.5 x 14.3 mm and 157g of weight. The difference here is that the Rise slides open to reveal a four-row QWERTY keyboard.

It doesn't have the water-resistant rating though.

There's no info on pricing yet or which carries will get the two tough droids, but we know they are expected to go on sale in the second half of this year.
