Google releases Chrome and Drive for iOS

Who said that Google's I/O conference isn't an important event for iOS users? Google just announced that it's adding iOS support to its Drive cloud storage service and Chrome web browser.

Google's own cloud storage, which launched back in April, is already available for download at the iTunes store, while Chrome is still on the way, but should arrive later today.

Google Drive is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch running iOS 5 or later and gives users 5 GB of free storage with the option to expand it for a fee. It will also boast the offline editing feature we just told you about.

Google Chrome will be available to iPhone and iPad users running their devices on iOS 4.3 or later. It still hasn't debuted at the App Store, but Google said that should happen later today. The app supports Chrome sync so that if you're using Chrome on your desktop computer too, you'll have all your bookmarks, searches, etc. with you on your iDevice. This should help boost that impressive number of active users even further.

Leaked Lenovo LePhone K860 to feature quad-core Exynos, ICS

The LePhone K860 leaked on a Japanese mobile blog earlier today, and is set to be only the third device confirmed to run on the quad-core Exynos chipset, after the GSM version of the Samsung Galaxy S III, and the as-yet unreleased Meizu MX 4-core.

Besides the quad-core processor clocked at 1.4Ghz, the K860 is set to come with ICS out of box. It will feature a 5 inch 720p display, 8MP camera with 2MP front-facing, 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of ROM.

The device comes in at 185 g and measures 143.6 x 74.5 x 9.6 mm. There's no word yet on whether it will ever become available on the European and American markets, but the LePhone K860 should hit China by the beginning of August.

Google Nexus 7 gets benchmarked, results are unsurprisingly good

There has hardly been any doubt that the freshly announced Google Nexus 7 would be a solid performer on the benchmark arena. After all, NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chipset with four CPU cores is a well known powerhouse by now. However, we couldn’t help but be curious about the way Google’s slate would stack up against the well-established, higher priced players on the tablet market.

As you probably know by now, the Google Nexus 7 CPU cores are clocked at 1.3GHz each – that’s a tad less than the typical 1.5GHz, which we’ve seen on other Tegra 3 devices. In order to make up for the lost MHz, the slate runs the brand new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, served the way Google does it best – in the purest possible fashion.

With a number of optimizations implemented in the latest Google OS, coupled with the powerful hardware of the Nexus 7, it is no surprise that the expectations towards the slate’s benchmark performance ran quite high. Here go the results.

Sunspider • Browsermark

The scores of the Nexus 7 in Sunspider JavaScript Benchmark and Rightware Browsermark are downright impressive. The slate recorded the best result in Sunspider and came second behind the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity in the Browsermark. Keep in mind that these two benchmark scores are solidly influenced by the new OS, which the tablet boots.

GLBenchmark 2.1

GLBenchmark 2.1 has been run in several modes on the Nexus 7, showcasing the hardware capabilities of the tablet. Except for the offscreen 720p mode, which is dominated by the Apple iPad, the ASUS made Google Slate performed on par with the most powerful tablets available at the moment.

Google Chrome almost doubles its active users, now at impressive 310m

Google Chrome is among the topics of discussion at day two of Google’s I/O developer conference. According to Senior Vice President of Chrome and Apps over at Google, Sundar Pinchai, Chrome has 310 million active users.

This makes Chrome the most popular web browser in the world. Year over year the jump of active users has almost doubled from the 160 million back in 2011.

Google’s Gmail isn’t doing too shabby either amassing around 425 million active users – a number that was 350 million back in January of 2012.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preview: First look

Introduction

Google used its I/O 2012 conference in San Francisco to unveil the latest release of Android. Carrying the version number 4.1, the new Android Jelly Bean is supposed to come as more of a polish to Ice Cream Sandwich, than a major game changer.

Don't think for a second though, that Jelly Bean doesn't have anything interesting to offer. On the contrary - the latest Android version brings a truckload of new features, and should help noticeably improve the overall user experience. Here goes the full breakdown:

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean changelog:

  • Project Butter has brought smoother and faster feeling user interface

  • Improved notification center with expandable and actionable notifications

  • Updated widget behavior

  • Improved camera and gallery apps for easy photo snapping and sharing

  • Improved keyboard behavior with with word prediction

  • Added Accessibility options with support for external Braille input

  • Enhanced Android Beam allowing transfer of photos and video

  • Offline Voice recognition and typing

  • Google Voice search is more intelligent than ever

  • Updated Google Search user interface

  • Google Now adds automatic information feeds to your device (weather, traffic, sports, etc)

  • Bi-Directional text and additional language support

  • Truly high-resolution contact photos

  • USB audio output and HDMI multichannel audio output

  • App encryption and Smart App updates

The list might not be too long, but Android ICS was arguably the most feature-rich platform already, so major changes were hardly required. With Android easily the most popular mobile OS out there, Jelly Bean's task is to solidify its lead by polishing the user experience.

The Project Butter sounds like a great start, but it's certainly not the only trick up Jelly Bean's sleeve. The revamped notification center, the updated widgets and the new natural language searches should really make a difference to end users, while the improved Android SDK and extended API support should keep developers happy.

The question remains if every feature on the list work as advertised, so let's not waste any more time and start testing them out. User interface awaits you on the next page.

Apple's latest motion, seeks to ban Samsung Galaxy S III US sales

Quite frankly, we were beginning to worry that Apple had gone a bit too quiet on the legal front with Samsung in the days following the launch of the Galaxy S III. Apparently, the Cupertino based giant was preparing for a new strike against its biggest competitor, as its lawyers filed a motion today, requesting a ban of the Korean flagship's sales in the United States.

With the Samsung Galaxy S III headed towards the shelves of all five major carriers this month, it is easy to guess that, should the ban take place, quite a few users might end up having their pre-ordered smartphones delayed.

In case this latest development seems a bit sudden to you, you are quite right. Apple's lawyers have added the Samsung Galaxy S III to a current motion for an injunction of Samsung Galaxy Nexus sales, whose hearing is set to take place tomorrow. Apple's legal team claims that a European version of the GS III, which has been examined briefly, infringes a couple of patents, which are part of the Galaxy Nexus case. They include universal search and smart links. Therefore, the Samsung Galaxy S III should face the music alongside the Galaxy Nexus.

Naturally, the Samsung legal team begs to differ, and claims that a separate motion is necessary for the Galaxy S III. Not to mention that the two days' notice is hardly adequate according to Samsung's lawyers.

This is a rather interesting development on the legal battle between the two giants. Naturally, we will keep you in the loop on the outcome tomorrow. In the meantime, hit the source link for the full legal breakdown and tell us how you feel about the whole thing.

Angry Birds Space makes it past the 100 million downloads’ mark

The good times at Rovio are on at full steam, people. Angry Birds Space – the latest incarnation of the wildly popular video game franchise has hit 100 million downloads.

While the abovementioned number is still quite far from the ten digit download count of the original, the sheer pace with which the milestone was reached is nothing short of impressive.

With amusement parks, TV series, and Formula 1 appearances well under way, perhaps it is time for Rovio to go ahead and pull the trigger of its rumored IPO.

What do you think?

Microsoft denies HTC early access to Windows RT

Just in case you are wondering why is HTC not one of the manufacturers currently showing off a Windows RT tablet at Computex, the reason is because Microsoft denied them access.

Bloomberg is reporting that HTC showed interest in making a Windows RT tablet but Microsoft denied them the license, over concerns “that HTC doesn’t sell enough devices or have ample experience making tablets”.

Another reason why Microsoft is said to have denied HTC access is because HTC wanted to customize the homescreen on their Windows tablets (read: Sense), something Microsoft has been against right from the days of Windows Phone.

It’s because of these reasons you won’t be seeing an HTC Windows tablet anytime soon. It’s not that they won’t be making them at all, just that they won’t be part of the first wave of Windows 8 tablets that will be coming out this year.

Nintendo showcased their upcoming Wii U console with some kickass games that take advantage of its unique controller. As you may know, the Wii U controller has a massive touchscreen between the controls, that gives access to special game features and also lets you switch off the main screen and just play the game on the controller itself, like a PSVita.

Some of the developers have really taken to this new control mechanism. We have the new Batman Arkham City Armored Edition where you can control Batman’s weapons and gadgets from the touchscreen while playing the game, among other things. Check out the videos below to see how this all works.

AT&T HTC One X gets update to fix Wi-Fi connectivity bug

The AT&T version of the HTC One X is now receiving a firmware update that brings the phone to version 1.85.502.3. The update weighs in at 64.55MB and is now rolling out over the air.

The main change here is fix to the Wi-Fi connectivity issue that some users were complaining about. Other changes include increase in Wi-Fi throughput, which means you will get improved speeds over Wi-Fi and AT&T address book fixes, where the contacts no longer get formatted when synced to AAB.

If you have a rooted device, this update will unroot your phone, so might have to wait a bit longer until a fix comes out for this.

Sprint's upcoming LG LS730 leaks out

It looks like the recently leaked LG LS970 "Eclipse" and LG LS860 "Cayenne" will have an entry level sibling on Sprint's network. The entry-level LG LS730 "Snapshot" has emerged in a curiously looking spy photo, which reveals the blurry front, and perfectly clear backside of the upcoming device.

The image on hand is enough to suggest that the upcoming smartphone is rather closely related to the globally available LG Optimus L7 P700, and so do its specs. They include a single-core Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU and Adreno 205 GPU, 768MB RAM and 4GB of built-in memory, 5MP camera and 1700mAh battery. The handset's body will be only 8.8mm thin - again in line with the waistline of the L7.

Expect to see the LG LS730 at some point in Q4, wearing a low price tag and modest market ambitions.

Android 4.0 expands to 7.1 percent of total Android user base

Google has updated the Android distribution figures on its developer website, which brings with it some good news. The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich user base has grown to 7.1 percent, up from the 2.9 percent back on April and the 1 percent in January.

The sharp growth is likely due to the launch of new Android 4.0 devices such as the HTC One series phones, as well as several high-end devices receiving the Android 4.0 update. With even more Android 4.0 devices on their way and more updates planned for current devices, this number will continue to rise.

Having said that, it is still abysmally small compared to the user base of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which runs on a staggering 65 percent of the Android devices out there. Even the two version old Android 2.2 Froyo is found on 19.1 percent of the total user base.

In some cases the OEMs and carriers are to blame for not launching new phones with Android 4.0 even after it was released and for not updating older phones on time. In others, the hardware of the phone is just not capable of running the latest update and this includes all the low-end Android phones, which account for a majority of the Android user base. So while the Android 4.0 user base continues to increase as the total Android user base widens, it doesn't seem like the Gingerbread share is going to shrink any time soon.

iOS6 to offer Facebook integration and a revamped AppStore?

Apple's WWDC is one of the industry's major events because in the past few years it has been the stage for some serious software announcements by the company. The event will probably offer a lot to developers too but from our user's point of view, we are dying to hear what Apple's been cooking this past year in terms of mobile software. A iOS 6 announcement is expected and the rumor mill is hard at work to catch some of the tasty morsels that we'll be offered come June 11.

A serious rumor making the rounds recently includes the unveiling of a new Apple HDTV - a smart, connected TV running iOS much like the similarly named Apple TV. But that aside, the mobile iOS will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the event in San Francisco.

Some of the rumored new features it's supposed to bring over, are proper Facebook integration, a redesign of the AppStore, iTunes Store and iBookstore, and even a new AirDrop file sharing trickery, courtesy of Wi-Fi Direct, which should be present in the next iPhone. Other recent rumors include new Maps and Photos apps plus an improved camera interface.

Facebook integration was a noticeable absentee last year and had our share of comments in the debate about this fact. Recent reports have it that Facebook will be included in the latest release of iOS. The integration would include a system-wide sign-in that would allow iOS users to share content from any apps on Facebook without further identification.

The other rumored changes include redesigned AppStore, iTunes store and iBookstore. The extent of the redesign is not known but it's supposed to improve interactivity, and we are only to guess whether Apple has managed to implement the improved app discoverability, courtesy of the recently acquired Chomp.

The other supposed upgrades rumored earlier include an upgraded Photos app, which will include an option to share a photo directly from the iCloud. The Camera app is supposed to include features popular on third-party cam apps - such as filters and effects. And finally, the Maps application on iOS is reportedly getting a new, mega-cool 3D view mode.

The WWDC keynote address is due for Monday, 6 p.m. London time, but we guess we'll be hearing a lot more about the upcoming iOS before that.

picplz to shut down permanently on July 3

By now you may have heard about or used the picplz service. They had mobile apps on iOS and Android that allowed you to capture, edit and upload image on to their servers. From there the users had the option to share the image to other social networking services.

picplz has now announced that it will be shutting down permanently on July 3. Their iOS and Android apps have also been pulled from the App Store and the Play Store respectively.

If you uploaded any pictures using their service, now would be a good time to download them as they will be all be deleted once they shut down on July 3. Unfortunately, users are reporting that the process is not easy, as there is no option to download all the images at once, so you will have to download them individually.

The death of services like picplz could be attributed to the ever growing popularity of Instagram. With the release of their Android app, it seems there really is no reason left for users to use any other service.

LG announces new X Note Z350 Ultrabook

LG has announced the new X Note Z350 Ultrabook with a 13.3-inch display, which is the successor to the older Z330 model. It is based on Intel’s third generation Core i-series platform (Ivy Bridge) and boasts of a boot up time of only nine seconds.

Another feather in its sleek silver body is a Red Dot Design Award, even though it does sort of look like every other Ultrabook we have seen recently. LG also claims that it is the thinnest Ultrabook in the world, with a thickness of just 14.7mm. And at 1.2kg, it’s also very light.

Although the Z350 runs on the Intel Core i5/i7 processor, there is no mention of the GPU. It does, however, come with built-in SSD + HDD combo option. These are all the details we could glean from the awkwardly translated Korean press release but we’ll let you know if we get some more info.
