Samsung Russia starts a countdown to the next Galaxy

As we near the May 3 press event in London where the next Galaxy device will finally be unveiled, we saw a countdown timer on Samsung Russia website.

The timer currently has just over 6 days remaining and ends on May 5, which could be the date when Russians will get the Galaxy S III.

This isn't the first time a regional Samsung website has done some S III teasing - the Denmark branch posted a teaser on its Facebook page last week.

Besides the inevitable Galaxy S3 (or S III) unveiling we expect Samsung to show its own cloud storage service and perhaps a new tablet as well.

Thanks, Shaheer Ali for sending this in!

P.S. Another reader also sent us the heads up on something that we find intriguing. Now it's time to put your conspiracy tin foil hats on. Has it occurred to you that the date the Samsung Galaxy S3 is about to be unveiled on matches its name quite closely. It becomes obvious only when you type the numbers in a font styled as a digital clock. How about that, eh?

Thanks, fazil!

Anyone Who Despises Calls Registered As "Unknown" Should Take Note

Most of our technological advances cause us to wonder what we ever did without them and the conveniences they offer to our modern, fast-paced lives. The cell phone is one such modern convenience that allows us to remain accessible and keep in touch wherever we are - or at least, wherever we can obtain adequate cell reception.

Just as other forms of technology have their drawbacks - such as the infamous glitches that occur with computers - both land line telephones and cell phones are prone to one of the most common forms of annoyance: unwanted, unsolicited calls and text messages. These types of calls and messages are the equivalent of email spam. For some reason, in spite of the Do Not Call Registry, unscrupulous individuals and companies manage to find loopholes to work around it and harass an individual on his or her cell phone.

Conveniences of Cell Phones

Your cell phone provides a convenient means to stay in touch with family and friends, as well as creates an accessible means for your business and professional contacts to reach you. Of course, many cell phones today allow you to do much more than simply make and receive calls and text messages.  You can take pictures, connect to the Internet, check your email, play games, listen to music, and numerous other activities, depending on the type of cell phone you have and the features and services your cell phone provider offers.

Annoyances of Unwanted Calls

Unfortunately, call spammers have also found out how convenient a cell phone is, for less than ethical activities.  Telemarketers frequently use cell phone numbers, as well as land line numbers, to try to elicit sales, while other individuals and companies call and text cell phone numbers for purposes such as requesting donations, taking surveys, promoting political candidates, or threatening legal action on old, expired debts.

Of course, other unwanted calls include actual wrong numbers, as well as calls from individuals who are intent on harassing, pranking, or even threatening people. These calls on your cell phone cross the line from annoying to alarming.

Actions to Take Against Unwanted Calls

You do have recourses against spammers, solicitors, pranksters, and others who abuse cell phone use.

For instance, it is illegal in most cases for telemarketers to call or text your cell phone. This is due to the fact that it incurs a charge for you, according to the FCC Advisory Board. The only exemption, typically, is for certain non-profit organizations or any other company with whom you have some form of pre-existing relationship or agreement.

You can also implement services to block or report unwanted calls and text messages. These services and their respective benefits and costs vary, depending on your provider's terms.

Here are some actions you can take to reduce, or hopefully eliminate, unwanted calls and text messages to your cell phone:

1] Do Not Call Registry: This is a service offered by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). You can register both landline phone numbers and cell phone numbers through either of the following methods: online at www.donotcall.gov; call 1-888-382-1222.  If you are already registered, and receive unwanted calls or text messages violating the Do Not Call rules, you may file a complaint.
Specific guidelines apply for filing complaints. First, they must be for telemarketers calling for commercial purposes, and under the following conditions: (1) Calling before 8am, or after 9pm; (2) Caller leaves a message, but no phone number, preventing you from returning a call to request the caller stops calling; (3) Caller does not identify him/herself; (4) Caller is one you have previously requested NOT to call any more; (5) Call is pre-recorded/auto-dialed message from someone you do not know, has no permission to call you, and/or with whom you have no previous relationship.

2] Call Block: Another step to reduce or stop unwanted calls or text messages to your cell phone is to place a call block. Your cell phone provider offers various ways to block calls, for different price points. For instance, you may add known numbers to subscriber preference block list. When those callers try to reach your number, they will receive a message that calls from their numbers will not be accepted. Depending on the provider, call block may or may not be available.

3] TrapCall: Another service to help reduce or stop unwanted calls to your cell phone is TrapCall. This service can unmask and identify incoming blocked or restricted numbers, as well as blacklist harassing callers and record unwanted calls. TrapCall is a paid service and offers various plans and pricing based on subscriber needs.

If you're tired of receiving unwanted calls or unsolicited text messages on your cell phone, take the appropriate actions as soon as possible to eliminate or at least reduce those spam calls and text messages.

Antivirus Software Comparison - Which is the Best?

Sometimes, you cannot help getting sick. No amount of pills, vitamins, and steady diet will always ensure you from never catching influenza, fever, or the common cold. But on the bright side, with your preventive action like taking prescription amounts of Vitamin C, good sleeping habits, you are well on your way to a good and possibly almost sick-free life.

Much like our body, our computers get infected, too. No, if you sneeze on your monitor, it will not catch your cold and heat up. The viruses that your computer may detect are from different anonymous sources, sometimes from the spam e-mails that you receive from unknown senders, to the files that you download from the internet. Nowadays, nowhere is safe.

As they say, prevention is cure. To fight these viruses and unwanted bugs, software developers have come up with anti-viruses of their own. These anti-virus software aims to remove malware, spyware and adware on your computer system. They prevent and detect the worms and Trojan horses that infect your system for a better and faster PC performance.

Antivirus software comparison websites are all over; each of them gives brief descriptions and reviews the product for other users to distinguish which of them is more suited to their liking.

There are a lot of big names out there like, Norton Antivirus, Kaspersky Anti-virus, Mcafee Antivirus, AVG Anti-virus, etc.For smoother and faster decision making, narrowing down the two best contenders is a good idea.

To measure which of the antivirus software out there is suited best for you, here are a few basic criterion that someone like you, perhaps a newbie in the techie area, should consider such as: the range of the protection of the antivirus, if it will help protect you from online and offline PC threats, its usefulness in removing viruses and unwanted spyware from your hard drive, and the series of features that are appealing to the user.

Taking into account these measures for deciding which antivirus to choose, the high ranking two would be BitDefender Antivirus and Kaspersky Antivirus, for their ratings and vote count for the availability of features like full virus scanning and automatic software update, the scope of the protection of the antivirus on your computer, and its efficiency in removing threats is ideal.

The decision is still mainly up to you. This is just a helpful hint so you don’t have to look that hard to choose which software is the right one for you.

There are still the other factors such as the monetary value of the aforementioned antivirus software. But sometimes you have to spend a lot to have an effective preventive course of action.

In every competition, even in something as trivial as choosing which antivirus will protect your PC best, there is the first place winner, the second runner-up, and those who receive the consolation prizes. If it seems you cannot afford first-class software, maybe because you’ve downloaded the trial and it’s too complicated for you, there are still the basic functions of the second runner-up, and even more effortless consolatory winners.

So, you have your checklist of antivirus software features which can be found in the software comparison part of your research, which at best you should look through thoroughly and consider if it best fits your PC protection needs. There will always be many to think of when making choices, especially when it concerns the health of your computer and your want for it to be improved. Choose well.

Samsung Australia says it has nothing to do with “Wake up!” campaign

Samsung’s advertising has been pretty aggressive, especially against rival Apple. They even mocked the infamous long lines of people queuing to grab their next iGadget. Samsung Australia actually pulled a stunt where they offered Galaxy S II phones for $2 right outside of Apple’s store. So, when a video of a flashmob waiving signs and chanting “Wake up!” showed up in front of an Australian Apple store, everyone (including us) jumped to the assumption that it was the South Korean company that organized it.

Except now Samsung Australia is denying that they had anything to do with it.

So, who was behind it? That’s not clear – there are plenty of companies and groups of people that have a bone to pick with Apple. There are various speculation about who did it (like RIM, for instance), but at this point there’s no solid evidence to point the finger at anyone.

NVIDIA announces GeForce GTX 690

Nvidia announced its newest flagship graphics card at the NVIDIA Gaming Festival 2012 in Shanghai, the GeForce GTX 690. Combining two GTX 680s on a single card, the 690 is going to be one hell of a performer.

Combining two chips on a board is always tricky business and contrary to what one might expect the performance is not exactly double that of a single GPU card. In fact it’s usually less than the two cards running in SLi mode. But with the GTX 690, NVIDIA is aiming to get performance that will be equivalent to running two GTX 680 in SLi, while maintaining the convenience and lower cost of having a single card in your system.

The GTX 690 is double of everything. Twice the stream processors (2 x 1536), twice the texture units (2 x 128), twice the Raster Operations Pipeline (ROP) (2 x 32), twice the memory bus width (2 x 256-bit) and twice the VRAM (2 x 2GB). Thankfully TDP for the GTX 690 (300W) has not doubled over the GTX 680 (195W). The core and boost clock speed now stands at 915MHz and 1019MHz, slightly lower than 1006MHz and 1058MHz for the single GTX 680.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any reviews out yet for this card but if NVIDIA’s own scores are to be believed, the GTX 690 is on an average 75% faster than the GTX 680 in the same game.

But performance is not the only thing NVIDIA was after with the GTX 690. For the first time, a considerable amount of time and effort was also spent in improving the industrial design of the GPU. The design and the materials used take great inspiration from the engines of supercars and the outer shell in particular is made to look like an F1 car’s engine block.

But of course, looks aren’t everything and the design also has to be good at dissipating heat, especially on a dual-GPU card. For this, the 690 uses a pair of custom vapor chamber heat sinks cooled by a center mounted axial fan which should help keep the temperatures and sound levels down.

The GTX 690 will go on sale on May 3. Priced at $999, the GTX 690 costs exactly twice as much as the GTX 680 and is NVIDIA’s most expensive graphics card yet. Considering that the performance is roughly equivalent to dual GTX 680 in SLi, the pricing is appropriate. What little you lose in terms of performance you gain in terms of reduced power consumption and the convenience of having just one card inside your PC. We will still have to wait and see how well it performs in the reviews when they come out later this week.

Backup Software Comparison – Which is the Best?

Don’t you just hate it when one of your notebooks goes missing, just on the night before a big exam? They have all of your written notes in it, most especially the important formulae that you would need for the problem solving section of the test.

Keeping an extra copy of those notes is a valuable asset, if you are a clutter bug when it comes to your belongings. Printing two or more copies of your five-page, one thousand five hundred word essay is very important, if in any case a random dog decides to munch on your final project.

Almost everything is digital nowadays. Long gone are the days that you have to handwrite your book reports into the night, copy your favorite music mix onto tapes, record your favorite television shows on VHS tapes. They can all be available and easily accessible online, just by keying in titles and you would be rewarded with multitudes of results.

But, not every technology is fool-proof. There are times when it crashes and you are unable to gain access to your files. Or worst, the music collection that you have started for over a year now, containing the complete albums and never-before-heard tracks of your favorite bands, become corrupted or vanish. It is simply just heartbreaking.

Never fear, for there are always solutions to these kinds of problems. Do not despair that there is nothing in the world to do now but weep.

Keep this in mind: prevention, prevention, and prevention. Like the advice to print two or more copies of your essay, keeping photocopies of your notes, it is essential to save your files regularly, update them and back them up into your system so that such a problem like your folders and documents being eaten up by a virus, you are confident that they are not forever lost.

Since technology is so flexible now, you can actually find different software serving just the purpose of backing up your files. There are many of them out there, so it is good to suggest lining them up and comparing them.

Basic backup software comparison does not take much. Since a backup software’s main function is to make exact duplicates of your files, that would be starting point in analyzing the software that you would like.

You should want one that is efficient in copying your files and saving them in a safe place. It should be easy to use, most especially if you are not computer literate, like professional IT specialists. And most importantly and most basic of all, the software must be in compliance with your operating system – that it could be supported by your laptop or PC, whether you are running on Macintosh, Windows, or Linux.

Like with an anti-virus software comparison, the search is not just limited to reading, like you would a fashion catalog. You may immerse yourself in the program in a short test run with their free trials offered. That way, you have a good feel of the software from the inside-out.

This is to help you work smoothly, so you will not have to stress about you losing three hours of important work.

HTC One X battery test concludes, the results are inside

So here we are at the end of the HTC One X battery test and we are ready to share the results with you. If you wonder how efficient that Tegra 3 4-PLUS-1 architecture is and whether the companion core makes up for the four power-hungry ones, here is the place to find out.

The HTC One X bright 4.7? HD LCD is certainly hard to feed, but you can’t blame the huge 1800 mAh power pack for lack of trying.

As usual, we started with the talk time test, which saw the One X deliver its best performance of the whole test. With the screen staying off the whole test, the large battery mattered big time and helped the One X survive for nearly 10 hours on a single charge.

We came to the final and most important result in our test. The HTC One X got an endurance rating of 37h, which suggests you will only need to charge it once every 37 hours if you use it for an hour of each of the three activities per day.

While 37h isn’t the highest rating we have seen, it’s more than an acceptable score, given the screen size and the resolution of the One X. We guess anyone who doubted the battery life of the Tegra 3-packing smartphones and the efficiency of their quad-core processors should now breath a sight of relief.

You can find more about the test itself here.

Benefits of Using SharePoint Lists

A SharePoint list refers to an aggregation of matching items which permits organizations and individuals using these lists to create daily collaboration sites. Each SharePoint list has fields that describe the representation of the data and each list will have the same representation. This technology supports various types of visuals when editing data and displaying the data which then can be used for an individual or organizations specific project or task.

When you create a SharePoint List you will benefit from such features as: a user interface that gives you the ability to filter, edit, group, and sort the data. You will be able to integrate your data with other libraries and lists. You have the ability to search and there is the benefit of effective security management on list level and item level. As well, more than one user can edit data at the same time. You will also have rich text support, RSS, and SharePoint alerts. In addition, you can select data from other systems using BDC look-up columns. An example of using SharePoint on a website is offering an online sign up sheet where people ca sign up for an activity.

Another benefit of using SharePoint Lists is that users can extract specific information using a query. You just type in your search criteria to extract the data and the system will search through all the lists and locate and display the relevant information from the search query. As well, SharePoint also has the tools to display data in a certain order such as alphabetically. It can also filter out irrelevant information while displaying the most relevant data.

Business managers benefit from using SharePoint lists, For instance, lists can be created an used for appointment scheduling, booking events, creating and assigning tasks, managing employee stats, etc. They can schedule their tasks by using intranet websites and when a task is completed, they can be marked off. When businesses use lists on their websites, SharePoint can be utilized as it will gather the information and share it with other people. As well, new tasks can be posted instantly so that employees get instant information.

The most common SharePoint software includes Windows Share Point, Excel, and SharePoint Calendar. SharePoint software comes with a number of templates that can be adapted and used to collect information in a relevant way. Users can modify the look of the templates by changing the data types such as when displaying corporate logos on websites. Windows SharePoint Services allow you to do the following: set up a public or private site in just a couple of minutes, customize the site by choosing a template from the template gallery, modify the page by adding pictures, text, and tables using just a Web browser, create a separate site under the main site for various project groups, and it can be used by anyone requiring group collaboration.

Today using SharePoint Lists are a an invaluable tool to help businesses improve operations, promote team project collaborations, keep employees up to date on current business projects and tasks, manage employees more effectively, and improve business productivity. The benefits of SharePoint Lists make SharePoint an important investment for any organization.

Implementing Touch Screen Learning in Schools

New technological advancements in information technology are finding their way into the field of education and presenting ways in which to engage learners more effectively. Touch screen learning is one such innovation, not yet widely available in all schools but assisting learners with disabilities as well as providing basic learning tools for babies, toddlers and young children.

Examples of touchscreen devices include handheld gaming systems, ATM's, smartphones and directories in shopping malls and tourism offices. They are basically electronic display areas which are responsive to touch, either by the human hand or finger or by digital pens used to select small icons and on-screen options.

What the functionality of these displays entails for the end-user, is that these devices can be accessed and interacted with in a more direct way than via external means such as a keyboard or mouse. For this reason, it has proven to be more user-friendly and easy to understand for people who have difficulty using conventional computerized devices. Visually, it is more stimulating and may even serve to decrease time lags for those waiting in line to make payments, buy tickets or access basic information especially with regards to banking. In addition, it is a technology being used to simplify education and make it more accessible to all kinds of learners.

Touchscreen technology has functioned very well in helping learners with disabilities to develop much-needed skills. Case studies tell of cerebral palsy learners who learn to hold their heads up and improve muscle tone in their arms and hands. Additionally, games teaching math and literacy skills provide fun-filled and valuable education.

In another example, a quadriplegic student was assisted by a similar innovation that enabled him to communicate by means of a computer. The student made use of an on-screen keyboard, selecting the required letter by highlighting it and then pressing a button.

Foundational education for babies and toddlers is also improving in leaps and bounds due to technological products of this nature. Because today's children are able to relate to computerized devices and advanced technology easier than ever before, new products on the market automatically cater for these needs. Teams of forward-thinking designers are recognizing the pivotal role that technology plays in the development of babies, when implemented through the use of creative and innovative touchscreen devices.

Tablet PC's are being introduced into the classroom in many states, although lack of funds still remains a challenge for those schools who do not have the capacity to afford them. These PC's are custom-made for their purpose in schools, and are therefore durable, flexible and relatively lower priced than the average PC targeted at mainstream consumers, although at the moment, its implementation in schools is on a trial basis. Many are optimistic that its user-friendly nature will lead to easy training systems and better, more direct ways of using technology.

Gradually, just as this technology has been implemented in society in various ways, it is evident that its use in schools may become more prevalent. Touch screen learning is proving to be a way in which to engage not only learners with disabilities, but also learners who find it easy to relate, engage with and use this technology in all spheres of life, including for educational purposes.

Samsung Galaxy S3 photo leaks, yes, again

It's time for today's "photo of the Samsung Galaxy S3" leak - these seem to occur more and more often as we come closer to May 3, when Samsung's Unpacked event will finally settle things one and for all.

The leaked photo in question (the one on the left) shows a device with a hardware home button with two capacitive keys on its sides (menu and back). You can see the volume rocker on the left and the power/lock key on the right - basically, the standard Samsung arrangement.

Note: the middle and right photos come from previous leaks.

The newly leaked photo is the one on the left

The screen is off, so there's no way to tell if the device uses the on-screen buttons that we've seen in previous leaks. But it does look an awful lot like the sketch in the alleged leaked manual. And the bezel is very thin - as it would need to be with the rumored 4.6-4.8" screen.

ZTE announces quarterly results, misses analyst expectations

As you may recall, ZTE made some bold statements earlier this week, most notably involving ambitions to start shipping some 100 million smartphones annually by 2015. This goal now seems slightly less realistic, after they fell short of their forecast results for the first quarter of the year.

ZTE's biggest rival, crosstown manufacturer Huawei, reported a 53% decrease in its 2011 profits, despite a sales growth of only 11.7% and ZTE also noted similar trends.

Many analysts attribute these numbers to ongoing price wars between the two giants, as each strives to gain market share in China's competitive mobile economy.

Either way, ZTE is still slated to release a massive amount of devices in the coming years, if their MWC announcement extravaganza is any indication. We'll have to wait and see if they make you reach for your wallet anytime soon.

HTC Titan II review: Wrath of the Titan

Introduction

HTC made quite a statement when it announced the original Titan in the summer of 2011. Its sequel is aiming to do so as well. After all, smartphones with 16MP camera sensors are a rare sight on any market. Launched at the same time as the attention grabbing Nokia Lumia 900 during this year's CES, the HTC Titan II appears built for the sole purpose of besting the Finnish flagship's spec sheet.

HTC Titan II official photo

The HTC Titan II is hardly a revolution in the realm of devices, running Microsoft's mobile OS, thanks to the software giant's strict hardware restrictions. It only ups the original with the presence of LTE network support, as well as a beefier camera unit.

But what a camera unit it is! The HTC Titan II packs a monstrous 16MP sensor, which is the biggest one, offered in a smartphone on the U.S. market. The camera alone puts the Titan II in the way of some seriously established smartphone players. Heck, it might even try and give your point-and-shoot digicam a run for their money.

The first thought, which ran across our minds when we saw the HTC Titan II for the first time was whether the handset was fresh enough to carry the "II" moniker. After all, the AT&T exclusive, Windows Phone running smartphone is almost impossible to tell apart from its predecessor, especially when you look at its front. Here is our usual initial look at its pros and cons.

Key features:

  • 4.7" 16M-color S-LCD capacitive touchscreen of WVGA resolution (480 x 800 pixels)

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support; tri-band 3G with HSDPA 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA 5.76Mbps

  • LTE network connectivity

  • Windows Phone 7.5 Mango OS

  • 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 CPU, Adreno 205 GPU 512MB RAM

  • 16 megapixel autofocus camera with dual-LED flash; dedicated button; 1.3MP front-facing unit

  • 720p video recording @30fps

  • 16GB of built-in storage

  • Standard 3.5mm audio jack

  • Standard microUSB port (charging)

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n

  • Stereo Bluetooth 2.1

  • Mobile Office document viewer/editor

  • Social network integration and cloud services

  • Built-in A-GPS receiver

  • Stereo FM Radio with RDS

  • Equalizer and sound enhancer present

  • 1730mAh Li-Ion battery

  • Comes with HTC Hub and a load of handy, exclusive HTC apps

  • Surprisingly light and easy to handle for its size

Main disadvantages:

  • 720p video recording does not do the massive camera sensor any justice

  • WVGA resolution does not look that great on a screen this size

  • Non-expandable storage

  • No mass storage mode; Zune only file management and sync

  • No Flash (or Silverlight) support in the browser

  • No DivX/XviD video support (automatic transcoding provided by Zune)

  • Non-user-replaceable battery

  • A much higher price than its direct competitor, the Nokia Lumia 900

  • Design is dated and not exactly innovative

Clearly, the HTC Titan II's specs are as good as they get on Windows Phone device these days. The handset's camera might even help it find its way to the shopping lists of smartphone buyers with a knack for photography. So far so good then, we say.

Unfortunately though, the road to success is not perfectly laid out for the HTC's latest Windows Phone creation. The smartphone was announced, and hit the AT&T shelves together with the Nokia Lumia 900, sporting double the price tag, as well as significantly lower marketing budget. With the Finnish creation getting levels of attention and media coverage, previously reserved only for Apple's iPhone, the HTC Titan II will likely have trouble getting the attention it deserves - a fact which will make it difficult for the device to sell in large numbers.

HTC Titan II live photos

In a nutshell, the HTC Titan II will have a serious challenge making it in today's market. Does the newcomer have enough to face the competition? Read on to find out. As always, we'll kick things off with an unboxing, followed by design and build quality inspection.

Editorial: You might notice that this review is shorter than usual and doesn't include all of our proprietary tests. The reason is it has been prepared and written far away from our office and test lab. The HTC Titan II for AT&T is a US-only phone and it is unlikely that it gets to the shores of the Old Continent. Still, we think we've captured the essence of the phone in the same precise, informative and detailed way that's become our trademark. Enjoy the good read!

Meizu EP-40 headphones ears-on

We recently got a set of Meizu EP-40 headphones in the office, and we decided to give them a whirl.

The headphones are designed to have a High Speed Response technology, which ideally minimizes the resistive impact they have on audio signals coming from devices. Here’s a full list of specs:

  • 7µm ultra-thin composite diaphragm
  • 8mm powerful drive unit
  • 14 0.05mm high-purity oxygen-free copper headphone wires
  • 3 earplugs in different sizes
  • Microphone and remote
  • High-speed Response Technology
  • Speaker impedance: 16 O
  • Sensitivity: 101dB SPL
  • Frequency response: 20Hz ~ 20KHz
  • Maximum input power: 10mW
  • Length: 1.2m
  • Plug: 3.5mm

Inside the vinyl box that’s designed to look like a record (get it? because records are reminiscent of… oh, nevermind) you’ll find the headphones surrounded by foam padding. The three earbud sizes are also housed here, so you have a place to store the sizes you aren’t using without the risk of losing them.

No, it’s not a roll of electrical tape… • It’s the Meizu EP-40 box!

The headphones also come with the usual “remote” wired on the cable. Nonetheless, it has your standard back/forward/play/pause functionality optimized for use on Meizu’s Flyme OS music app, found on the Meizu MX. On the back of the remote is a small mic pinhole, you can use the headset for proper voice calls.

The earpiece and wired remote with mic.

The MEIZU EP-40 headphones with remote and microphone are available in any of Meizu’s retail stores in mainland China and Hong Kong for 269 CNY or HKD ($34). They’re also available via Meizu’s online shop here (Chinese).

LG reveals Q1 2012 financial results, has turned the corner

LG has announced its financial report for the Q1 of 2012 and things are looking good for the Korean tech giant.

The company reported consolidated sales of $10.78 billion, which is 7.1% and 11.5% lower compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year respectively. However, that's expected , due to the slow nature of the period which comes right after the holiday season. Consolidated net profit, on the other hand, is up at $214.3 million.

Handset shipments decreased by 22% quarter-over-quarter to 13.7 million unit and revenue from the division declined 10% compared to the previous quarter to $2.2 billion. Nevertheless, the division remained profitable, due to increased smartphone sales portion and the host of LTE-rocking phones it offers.

In fact, the Optimus Vu and Optimus LTE were the highest selling devices for the company. As for Q2 of 2012, LG doesn't expect the demand for handsets to increase dramatically. LTE smartphones will continue to be more desired in the developed countries as the European market prepares for the wider availability of LTE networks.

Nokia 808 PureView new samples arrive, look stunning

Nokia is apparently not all about the Amazing Everyday and still finds time for its 808 PureView cameraphone monster. Today we got some fresh samples from the 41 megapixel to feast our eyes on. It's not the first time they're doing it, but you won't hear us complaining.

Nokia 808 PureView samples

Most of the photos have been downsized to 5 megapixels, which supposedly allows us to see the best of the PureView technology and they are really impressive. The dynamic range and the amount of fine detail resolved is splendid and while we can't say anything about their accuracy, colors certainly look nice. Not to mention the shallow depth of field, which is normally next to impossible to achieve with a cameraphone.

There are also a few full-res samples, where the "per-pixel" sharpness levels isn't quite as impressive, but the overall resolved detail is mind-blowing. We'd say that the full-res samples are about as sharp when viewed at 100% as the current best cameraphones. The thing is there's three to four times more pixels on the 808 PureView.

In other words nothing currently on the market comes even close to what the 41 MP sensor inside the Nokia 808 PureView offers.

Google Maps for Android updated with scale bar, elevation data

The Google Maps Android App has been updated with several new features, including a scale bar ala the desktop version, as well as plus/minus buttons, which you can be visible on-screen.

There’s also a nifty new Labs tool, which allows you to see the elevation difference between two points.

The first two features need to be enabled from the settings menu in order to show up, while the measure tool can be accessed if you’ve enabled the relevant Labs feature. The scale bar cannot be adjusted like on the desktop version, but it does change based on your zoom level.

In case you’re not familiar with them, the Labs feature in various Google applications allow you to access some nifty additional functionality, which is still being tested. Check out the new Google Maps version for Android here.
