Apple iPad mini to allegedly launch in October

AllThingsD is reporting that Apple will announce the iPad mini in October, according to several of their sources.

The launch event will take place only a month after the iPhone event, which is supposed to take place on September 12, although Apple is yet to confirm that.

Initially, some postulated that the iPhone and the iPad mini events will take place simultaneously, although that seemed unlikely considering Apple has historically kept the two product events separate.

This latest news tells us that although Apple might not be willing to merge the iPad events with the iPhone's, they are also not going to wait till next year's main iPad event to release the smaller variant.

LG E973 Optimus G emerges in leaked images

With IFA only a few days away, the LG E973 Optimus G has emerged in leaked photos. One of the likely stars of the shows looks bound to claim the title of the best equipped device in the Android realm.

The LG E973 Optimus G packs a killer spec sheet, which includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with four 1.5 GHz CPU cores, 2GB of RAM, and Adreno 320 GPU. The display is LG's own 4.7" IPS HD unit with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution and pixel density of 320ppi. A 13MP camera is located on the back of the handset. The OS of the pre-production unit in the leaked photos is Android 4.0 ICS.

Unsurprisingly, the report claims that the smartphone is blazing fast thanks to its top of the line hardware. However, there might be some improvements to the hardware before the device's official announcement, including an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

We will be covering IFA live from Berlin, so expect the full scoop on the upcoming smartphone as soon as we hear about it.

Samsung announces the Galaxy Player 5.8

If you thought the Galaxy Note was big, wait till you get a load of this. Samsung has just announced the new Galaxy Player 5.8, where 5.8 is not just a random number but actually the size of the display. This should dwarf even the display on the upcoming Galaxy Note II, which is rumored to be around 5.5-inch in size.

Surprisingly, though, for something the size of a small country, the display has a resolution of just 960 x 540, giving it a pixel density of 190 ppi. Samsung has also dropped their favorite Super AMOLED in favor of LCD technology for this panel.

Other details are rather sketchy at this point; we don’t even know what the back looks like. What we do know is that the Galaxy Player 5.8 will have Android 4.0 and a 2,500mAh battery. It will also be available in 16GB and 32GB variants (with microSD card slots) and black and white color options.

The pricing and launch dates are also unknown as of now but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out. Perhaps Samsung will provide more details at its upcoming August 29 event or at the IFA 2012.

Motorola Atrix HD review: The Atrix reloaded

Introduction

The LTE-packing Motorola Atrix HD for AT&T faces a couple of hard challenges. First and foremost, it has to build on the user experience of original Atrix 4G, giving its owners who are up for an upgrade these days, a reason to stick with the brand.

And that's not going to be easy, considering the iconic status that the Atrix 4G had for Motorola. Announced as one of the brightest stars of CES 2011, the Atrix 4G developed a solid following and for a good reason - it was one of the very first proper dual-core Android powerhouses, whose finger scanner added an extra dash of massive geeky coolness.

Motorola Atrix HD
Motorola Atrix HD

Motorola Atrix HD official photos

Additionally, the Atrix HD will try to appeal to all Motorola fans in the United States who were not given the chance to own a GSM flavored, subsidized Motorola RAZR.

And now that we have the smartphone's family history out of the way, let's take a closer look at its specifications.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM and 3G support

  • Class 17 LTE network support

  • 21 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA

  • 4.5" 16M-color LCD capacitive touchscreen with HD resolution (720 x 1280 pixels); Gorilla Glass; ColorBoost technology

  • Superb build quality; Kevlar coated, splash resistant body

  • Lightly customized Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich

  • 1.5 GHz dual-core Krait CPU; Adreno 225 GPU; Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 chipset

  • 1 GB of RAM and 8GB of storage; microSD card slot

  • 8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash; face detection and geotagging; 1080p video recording

  • 1.3MP front-facing camera for video-chat

  • Wi-Fi b/g/n and DLNA

  • GPS with A-GPS

  • Accelerometer, proximity sensor and auto-brightness sensor; compass

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v 4.0

  • microHDMI port

  • Smart dialing, voice dialing

  • DivX/XviD video support

  • Office document editor

  • Attractive price tag

Main disadvantages

  • No dedicated camera button

  • 1780mAh battery and comparably short battery life

  • No FM radio

  • Dubious design - the AT&T logo at the bottom looks like a button, but it isn't

  • Non-user-replaceable battery

Quite frankly, we were caught by surprise when AT&T and Motorola announced the Atrix HD. For a smartphone whose specs are so impressive, the arrival of the latest member of the Atrix family as well as Motorola's most powerful handset on the US market, was a seriously low key affair.

As you can see from the lists above, the Motorola Atrix HD is one the best equipped smartphones currently on the market. You will be hard pressed to find much to frown about in its specs sheet - it screams flagship from beginning to end. And then there's the fact that the smartphone is priced lower than its direct rivals to sweeten up the deal even further.

The Atrix HD is not without its faults, though. We can't help but be skeptical about the size of the handset's battery. Its 1780mAh capacity is nothing to write home about, especially when put in a device manufactured by the company which gave the world the RAZR MAXX. The design could have also been a bit more inspiring, but that might be just us.

Motorola Atrix HD
Motorola Atrix HD
Motorola Atrix HD

Motorola Atrix HD live photos

Overall, the Motorola Atrix HD is one of the most interesting smartphones we've welcomed in our office recently. We are hoping that its real-life performance can maintain the good impressions that its specs sheet creates. As always, we'll kick its review off with an unboxing of the handset, followed by a look at its design and build quality.

Note: You might notice that this review is shorter than usual and doesn't include all of our proprietary tests. The reason is it has been prepared and written far away from our office and test lab. The Motorola Atrix HD for AT&T is a US-only phone, so it will probably never get to the shores of the Old Continent. Still, we think we've captured the essence of the phone in the same precise, informative and detailed way that's become our trademark. Enjoy the good read!

Samsung gives a sneak peek at the upcoming Windows 8 tablet with keyboard dock

The Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin or IFA will commence by the end of this week and naturally a bevy of manufacturers will be displaying their latest and greatest this year at Berlin. With the event this close, you are bound to see some leaks and teasers and Samsung has just provided one of the latter.

What you see above is Samsung’s upcoming Windows RT tablet, complete with a keyboard dock in the background. There is no name, no specs, just a picture with a tagline “Ready to be smart?”.

It will be interesting to see what hardware this tablet will be running on, and whether Samsung will use the Exynos 5 Dual that they announced earlier this month.

Google Nexus 7 now available in France, Germany and Spain

Google has expanded the availability of their Nexus 7 tablets to three additional markets. Users in France, Germany and Spain will now be able to purchase the Nexus 7 from the Google Play Store.

The 8GB model is priced at €199 ($249) and the 16GB model is priced at €249 ($312), which, as you can see, is a bit higher than what it costs in the US. Also, it doesn’t seem like you will get any extra credit, such as the $25 you get in the US. (Turns out you do get €20 as store credit in Europe). Lastly, the Play Store in these other countries also doesn’t have some of the contents such as magazines that you will find in its American counterpart.

Despite that, these are still good prices and many people will be glad that they now have the option of purchasing the tablet officially, extra credit be damned. Hopefully, Google will expand to other markets shortly.

Here's hoping that LG announces the beastly phone at the IFA trade show in Berlin next week.

More than half of WP phones worldwide are Nokias

Nokia has bet the house on Windows Phone and the numbers show that the Finnish company dominates the field when it comes to Microsoft's mobile OS. The stats were posted by the analysts over at Localytics and are based on app usage statistics from the Windows Phone Market place. Yet, Stephen Elop should probably hold off on popping open a bottle of champagne.

Worldwide Nokia holds over half of the market share of Windows Phone 7 handsets. They crossed the 50% mark in May and have continued their ever upwards trend since then.

Nokia's Q1 and Q2 reports, however, puts things in perspective - 2.2 million Lumias were sold in the first quarter and 4 million in the second. It didnt take all that much to conquer the Windows Phone market.

Still, Nokia's push has helped Windows Phone grow 312% in the first half of this year alone. For their effort, Nokia took a $750 million check from Microsoft.

In the US - a market that Nokia has been desperately hoping to recapture - things arent quite as rosy. The first Lumias hit US shores in January this year, so the company got a slow start. It climbed into second place in May but is still 4 percentage points behind the leaders, HTC.

The good news is Nokia does hold a third of the market in the US and WP share there has grown 273% since the beginning of the year.

Of course, all those numbers will soon become irrelevant - since no current WP7 devices won't see Windows Phone 8 (just 7.8), the new mobile OS from Microsoft will have to start from scratch.

It does fix a lot of issues with WP7 by adding support for more varied hardware and a great deal of exciting software features. And if Nokia leads the WP8 assault with a PureView-powered WP8 phone, things might start to look up for the ailing giant. A Windows 8 tablet won't hurt either, but that's just hearsay for now.

Nokia is feeling confident in the next-generation Lumia phones, that will come on September 5.

Samsung pushes back Tizen to 2013, Bada almost certainly dead

It's no secret that Samsung has for a long time planned to phase out its homegrown smartphone platform, Bada, and replace it with Tizen. While many of us hoped to see the first Tizen-running phone from Samsung this year, it seems like Samsung is going to be a bit too busy for that.

Instead, for the remainder of 2012, Samsung will be focusing on the development of Android devices, as well as on smartphones running Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 8.

Tizen developers have blamed the slow progress on lack of development tools and poor software upgrades.

Either way, with Tizen on the (slightly more distant) horizon, it's probably a safe bet that we won't see any more Bada phones.

To check out a preview of Tizen on a developer device, go here.

LG launches world’s first 84-inch, 4K 3D TV in Korea

LG has launched the world’s first 84-inch ‘Ultra Definition’ 4K 3D TV in Korea, with plans to release in international markets soon. This gigantic panel has a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160, which is basically four times the resolution of a 1080p display.

The TV, which is named 84LM9600, comes with LG’s Cinema 3D and a whole bunch of other features with 3D in the name. You also get a pair of passive 3D glasses for viewing the 3D content.

While on paper, this display sounds fantastic, but the reality is that there is very little 4K resolution content available at the moment, which means most of the time you’ll be looking at 1080p content quadrupled to its original size, on an 84-inch panel. This, along with the 25 million won (US$22,105) price tag, makes the whole thing hard to swallow. But if you’re someone who has loads of money to spend and want the absolute best TV to watch all the videos you shot using your RED Scarlet camera then this should make a great buy.

The LG 84LM9600 is out in South Korea right now and will be available in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America starting in September.

Google Nexus 7 goes on pre-order in France, to visit Germany in September too

Asus-made Google Nexus 7 tablet isn’t doing too good a job at sneaking quietly around Europe after its official UK launch. First, Asus themselves broke its cover by posting on their Asus Italy Facebook page that the 16GB version will launch in early September at €250. Now, the Jelly Bean tablet has been spotted in France and Germany too.

French site Fnac is already taking pre-orders for the Nexus 7 and it seems that Asus is setting up a corner in a Berlin store. Oddly, all sightings so far have been of the 16GB version.

Fnac seems to have jumped the gun on the Nexus 7 pre-orders but Darty and Boulanger will also be offering the tablet. The latter two have yet to put it up on their sites, but Fnac isn’t shy about dispensing info – they expect the 16GB version to be in stock starting September 3, with a price tag of €250.

An intern from the German tech site Android Next stumbled onto something interesting too – he was in a store in Berlin after closing yesterday where he saw an Asus table being set up. The store employees let it slip that it’s for the Nexus 7.

Today, after some more poking around the site reports that a 16GB Nexus 7 will launch on September 3, for the same €250 price. They couldn’t confirm if the tablet will come with Play Store credit or not (in the US you get $25 credit).

Of course, all this info is unofficial (even the Asus Italy Facebook post should be taken with a grain of salt). But you can be almost certain that the pricing info will turn out correct in the end.

Thanks to Frank Ritter for the tip!

Official Jelly Bean ROM for Samsung Galaxy S III I9300 leaks

Another proof that Samsung is hard at work on the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for its Galaxy S III flagship has emerged. An official Samsung Jelly Bean 4.1.1 ROM for the I9300 has surfaced in an ten-minute long video, thus showing us what the TouchWiz-ed version of Google's OS looks like.

Here's the video itself.

As you have probably noticed, the visual change is not overly dramatic, compared to the current ICS interface of the I9300. The notification area has been improved at a first glance, along with the expectedly smoother scrolling and integration of Google's latest additions to Android.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

An iPhone 5 mockup shows what the iPhone 4S should have looked like

According to its creators, what you see below is what the new iPhone 5 will look like. The beautifully looking render is made with a few reasonable points in mind. It has the same screen resolution as the iPhone 4/4S to save iOS some effort, a thinner body and a smaller connector.

Now judging by all those rumors, it’s all but guaranteed that the new iPhone will have a larger 16:9 screen, so chances are the guys from 3d-desk didn’t get it quite right. However you can’t deny that this is what the iPhone 4S should have looked like. By altering just a few elements (so it wouldn’t have increased production costs too greatly), this design still looks different enough to be easily recognizable and is cool enough to be worthy of a flagship smartphone.

Want to see it in action? Just check out the video below to get a feel of how the iPhone 4S could and should have been like.

We don’t know about you, but we wouldn’t mind seeing a similar dark frame and smaller logo on the real iPhone 5. Come on, Apple – at least think about it.

Google Nexus 7 review: Catching Fire

Introduction

Google's Nexus line has welcomed its first tablet, the Nexus 7. With a promise of solid specs for a low price, the ASUS-made tablet is poised to storm the Android tablet market and maybe even steal a chunk of Apple iPad's market share.

Asus Google Nexus 7
Asus Google Nexus 7
Asus Google Nexus 7
Asus Google Nexus 7

Google Nexus 7 tablet by ASUS

The Nexus 7 is powered by one of the two chipsets at the heart of current flagship phones and tablets - NVIDIA's Tegra 3. You get a quad-core CPU and good graphics muscle at a time when the only quad-core tablets around are pricy 10" models.

The 7" screen might be a compromise to some, but others will see an advantage in the excellent portability. 7" tablets fit in a coat pocket or purse. Plus, WXGA resolution and 216ppi pixel density sound more than reasonable. For comparison's sake, an Amazon Kindle Fire offers 170ppi, and even the new iPad isn't too far ahead with its 264ppi.

Some corners had to be cut to get a quality product at Google's intended price point. Here's the summary of what ASUS and Google offer for $200/$250.

Key features

  • 7" 16M-color IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen of WXGA resolution (1280 x 800 pixels), scratch-resistant Corning glass

  • NVIDIA Tegra 3 chipset: quad-core 1.3GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor; 1GB of RAM; ULP GeForce GPU

  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

  • 8/16 GB of built-in memory

  • 1.2 MP front-facing camera

  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot

  • Bluetooth; Android Beam

  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

  • GPS with A-GPS support; digital compass

  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor, gyroscope sensor

  • 4325 mAh Li-Po battery

  • Incredibly attractive pricing

Main disadvantages

  • The screen is a bit washed out and has poor sunlight legibility

  • Non-expandable memory

  • No USB mass storage or TV-out

  • No mobile data-enabled version

  • Front-facing camera only

  • Disappointing audio output

The Nexus 7 sure has its downsides, but it makes a killer tablet for web browsing, email or gaming. With the Samsung Galaxy Nexus price set at $350 (one of the cheapest dual-core droids, especially considering the screen size and resolution), it looks like Google's Nexus line has transformed from developer-oriented devices to some of the best Android buys.

But there's more to it than just bang for the buck - a Nexus gadget is a ticket to fast updates to the latest Android OS, an untouched Android at that (some don't really like vendor skins) and a great developer community pushing the gadgets beyond what Google had in mind for them.

Asus Google Nexus 7
Asus Google Nexus 7
Asus Google Nexus 7
Asus Google Nexus 7

Nexus 7 tablet at ours

So, is smart money on the Nexus 7 tablet or were there too many corners cut to make the price? Is the Kindle Fire shaking in its boots?

The specs look promising despite a few stinging omissions, but it's now for our tests to answer those questions. The trials start on the next page.

Samsung has sold 10 million Galaxy Notes worldwide

During the US announcement of Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note 10.1, we found out that the Korean giant has sold 10 million Galaxy Note devices worldwide. The news was brought by Younghee Lee – Samsung’s SVP and head of global marketing.

The number impressive includes sales of both the international Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 and its US sibling, the AT&T flavored, LTE sporting I717. Given that the T-Mobile version of the phoneblet has been on sale for only a week now, we don’t believe that it has contributed heavily to the above sales number.

While 10 million units in a little less than a year might not appear like much by Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S family standards, it is nevertheless an impressive feat for a device, which many branded as unnecessary when launched. The truth is that Samsung put the use of stylus as an input device back in fashion with its Galaxy Note family.

And now that everyone has noticed, we can reasonably expect the upcoming sequel to do even better than the original. What do you think?

Alleged Samsung N7100 Galaxy Note II official photo surfaces

The official announcement of the Samsung N7100 Galaxy Note II is just a couple of weeks away now, but only now we see what the new phoneblet might actually look like. We just got an alleged photo of the upcoming device, which reveals its front panel.

Now we wouldn't bet the house on this turning out to be an official image as even our tipster wasn't able to confirm its origin. Still, the image aligns nicely with previous rumors that suggested that the Samsung N7100 Galaxy Note II will have a Galaxy S III-inspired design, so even if the image is fan-made, it shouldn't be too far from the truth.

Along with the link to the alleged Samsung Galaxy Note II photo, our tipster also sent us some of the specs of the phoneblet. As expected, the 1280 x 800 pixel Super AMOLED screen will measure 5.5" and will utilize a regular RGB matrix. As for those FullHD screen rumors - according to the tip, it did indeed undergo testing, but it was found to be putting too much strain on the battery to make it to the final device.

The chipset inside was once again tipped to be Exynos 4 Quad, with quad-core CPU clocked at 1.5GHz. while the camera will use the same 8MP sensor as the Galaxy S III.

The Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy Note II is still being developed, so it's likely that the hybrid droid will launch with Android 4.0 ICS. There is an outside chance that Jelly Bean will be ready in time for the announcement, but it's more likely to come out later on.

Finally, some good news for the Galaxy S III users out there. The Jelly Bean update for the flagship smartphone is almost ready and will be released alongside the Galaxy Note II at the Samsung press conference on August 29.

Special thanks to our tipster, who chose to remain anonymous!

Microsoft details battery saving and touch features on Windows 8 RT, device sizes

Microsoft is gearing up to launch Windows 8, a version that marks a significant departure from previous incarnations in that it supports ARM processors. The Redmond-based company is quite excited about what it has achieved with Windows 8 RT (that’s what the ARM version is called) and the kind of hardware it and its OEM partners have designed.

One of the biggest advantages of ARM over Intel or AMD made x86 processors is energy efficiency. Windows 8 RT was designed to reduce power usage to capitalize on that, but also allow for smaller batteries, which in turn means thinner and lighter gadgets.

One of the power-saving features is Connected standby, which is the answer to the dilemma of choosing between putting your computer to sleep or keeping it on to receive notifications.

Connected standby is like sleep mode but Windows keeps an active connection and checks for new events. It uses a lot less energy than just keeping the computer on. Here’s some battery life figures of a Windows 8 RT device in playing an HD video and in active standby (I wish they included regular standby too, to see just how much energy is saved).

Batteries for RT devices will range from 25Wh to 42Wh, while screen sizes will be going between 10.1? and 11.6? for laptops and tablets. Here’s what you can expect in terms of overall size and weight of the devices.

A tablet that’s 8.35mm thick and weighs 520g sounds pretty good, but the 15.6mm, 1200g device seems a bit bulky even if it’s for a laptop. After all, there are laptops with x86 CPUs capable of running classic Windows (which means all Windows 7 apps) that are this big (for a 13? screen too).

Anyway, Microsoft’s desire to reduce power usage had some interesting consequences. They combined all chips responsible for touch interaction, which reduced power usage, but the new design also has some really cool features.

One of them is 100 Hz finger tracking. Here’s a video from Microsoft Research that shows just what kind of difference a high frequency tracking makes (100Hz is at the 10ms part of the video).

Also, check out these finger gestures that Windows 8 supports.

So, are you excited about the upcoming launch of Windows 8 (the Surface should launch on the same date)?

Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE from Sprint to go on sale for $199.99

Fans of QWERTY keyboards on phones can rejoice as the Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE will go on sale this Sunday, August 19 on Sprint in the US and is available for pre-order right now.

The phone is priced at $199.99 on a contract, which is a bit steep considering you get phones such as the Galaxy S III for the same price in the US. But what this phone lacks in outright specs it makes up by having a very comfortable looking QWERTY keypad.

Speaking of specs, the Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE comes with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, qHD display, 8GB internal memory, microSD card slot and Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

So far this phone is only announced for Sprint's network in the US with no plans for an international model.

Gartner: Android dominance continues, iPhone growth slows

Another day, another Q2 report - Gartner put out its assessment of the mobile phone world for the second quarter of this year, detailing how individual companies and smartphone OSes did.

Interestingly, the worldwide market saw only 419 million phones sold to consumers. "Only" because that's actually a decrease of 2.3% compared to last year's Q2 and "surprising" because smartphone sales were up a whopping 42.7% QoQ.

Despite this smartphones are yet to become the dominant breed worldwide - they accounted for just over a third of all phone sales. Most of those (83%) carried an Apple or a Samsung logo.

Samsung had an excellent quarter - it sold 45.6 million of their Galaxy droids (that's over half of all Androids sold in Q2) and the Galaxy S III became the best selling droid in that quarter. Gartner says S III sales would have been higher if it wasn't for the supply shortages.

Apple's iPhones cooled off a bit - they still grew in market share, but sales fell 12.6% compared to Q1. That's hardly surprising, though - with the impending iPhone 5 launch many will hold off on buying a new iPhone.

Things start to get grim when you look further down the table. Symbian's market share plummeted by 16.2 percentage points in a year and BlackBerrys lost 6.5 percentage points, both platforms now sitting at 5-6%.

The bad news for Nokia continues and Microsoft shares in their pain - Windows Phone 7 snatched only 2.7% of the market. To add insult to injury, Samsung's Bada OS has the same number, according to Gartner. Windows Phone 8 can't come soon enough it seems.

Nokia still has it's chin up - it's the second biggest phone vendor in the world, behind Samsung (we're talking smart and feature phones combined). They used to be a distant first a year ago.

Apple managed a third place, despite their smartphone-only business model, and ZTE comes in fourth, ahead of LG (who used to be third a year ago). Another Chinese company, Huawei, is ahead of big names like HTC, Motorola and RIM.
